Leading Off
The Ichabods will continue their 11-game road trip with five games this week. Wednesday they'll play a game at Rockhurst at 6 p.m. and then Saturday and Sunday they'll play four at Northwest Missouri. Saturday they will play a 1 p.m. doubleheader and Sunday they'll play a noon doubleheader.
Washburn was swept in four games at No. 6 Central Missouri last weekend to fall to 20-19 overall and move to sixth in the MIAA at 16-16. The Hawks swept Drury last weekend and are 26-13 overall with a seven-game winning streak. The Bearcats were swept in their MIAA series, dropping four straight at Pittsburg State and they're 14-28 overall and 13-19 in the league.
The Ichabods will be looking to gain some ground after falling from a tie for second coming into last weekend to sixth place. With eight MIAA games left, they hold on to the final spot in the conference standings that would make it into the MIAA tournament.
The Series Records
Rockhurst holds a slim 32-30 lead in the all-time series against Washburn after getting a 5-2 win earlier this year. The two first met in 1949 and they have played each other at least once a year since 1994. Washburn took two games last year and the previous two years they split four-game series.
The Ichabods and Bearcats are tied in their series record at 48 wins each. Washburn took three of four last year and the Bearcats did the same in 2010. The home team is 13-3 in the last four years.
Head Coach Steve Anson gets his 800th win at Washburn
Washburn head coach Steve Anson will enter the week with exactly 800 wins at Washburn after reaching the milestone April 14 against Lincoln in a 2-1, extra inning win. He coached his 1500th game at Washburn in the season finale last year and now in 2012, his 33rd season at Washburn, he reached the milestone. Anson, the winningest coach in the MIAA, is 800-736-3 (.517) in 33 seasons at Washburn and 823-758-3 (.521) in 34 seasons overall as a head coach.
Anson entered 2012 with the 10th highest win total among active NCAA Division II coaches with 803. That's the highest among MIAA coaches. Among coaches all-time, he's 27th in career wins.
Last Time Out For Washburn
WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- Central Missouri scored two runs in the ninth inning in the second game Sunday against Washburn to complete a doubleheader sweep of the Ichabods. The Mules won the first game 5-1 and took the second game 6-5 to sweep the four-game MIAA series.
Down 4-2 in the seventh inning of game two,
Marcus Peavler drove
John Calhoun in with a double down the left field line.
Tyler Bean later drove in Peavler and
Boone Plager with a single up the middle to give the Ichabods a 5-4 lead.
Ichabods starter
Trent Speaker shut the Mules out in the seventh and eighth and then gave up a leadoff single to Ben Cox in the bottom of the ninth. He stole second and then advanced to third on a fly ball. With one out, the Mules tried to bunt and Speaker fielded the ball and threw Cox out at the plate to make it two outs. With runners at first and second now, the Mules scored one on an error by Plager and then Bret Schwartz drove Jon Cotter in with a walk-off single through the right side of the infield.
Speaker (2-3) took the loss after the two unearned runs. He gave up four earned runs off nine hits and walked one with four strikeouts.
Calhoun and Peavler each went 3 for 5 and
Connor Crimmins went 3 for 3 with a walk. Calhoun doubled to lead off the game and then scored after a sacrifice bunt and RBI single by Peavler. The Mules scored two in the bottom of the first and one more in the second before Washburn got one back in the third. Boone singled to start the inning and later scored on a hit by Bean. The Mules built a 4-2 lead with a run in the sixth before Washburn's comeback in the seventh.
The Ichabods had 15 hits in the second game Sunday after getting just four in the first game of the doubleheader and 13 total in the first three games. The Mules kept Washburn hitless until the fourth in the first game Sunday and had a 5-0 lead in the sixth, getting all the runs off Bean, Washburn's starter who fell to 3-3.
The Ichabods had just four hits in the game with two of them producing their only run in the seventh.
Eric Graff doubled and then Eric Lammers replaced him on the base path.
Blaine Matthews then drove him in with a double.
Washburn falls to sixth in MIAA standings
The Ichabods fell from a tie for third to sixth in the MIAA standings after last week's action. Washburn went 0-4, getting swept by first-place Central Missouri.
The top six teams in the league will earn spots in the MIAA tournament, May 10-13 in Kansas City, Kan., at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.

Ichabods picked sixth in MIAA preseason poll
The Ichabods were picked to finish sixth in the MIAA preseason coaches poll released Thursday by the conference office. Washburn finished sixth in last year's conference standings to earn a trip to the postseason tournament.

Mark Biesma had a solid outing in his first career start for Washburn. He gave up three runs, two earned, off three hits over five innings. He gave up a walk and then an RBI triple to open the game and Rockhurst led 2-0 after an inning. The Hawks scored an unearned run in the second before Washburn got on the board in the bottom of the third.
Tyler Bailey reached on a two-base throwing error by the shortstop and then he scored when
Blaine Matthews singled up the middle.
That was the only run Rockhurst starter Mark Sappington gave up. He struck out 11 through six innings and gave up two hits and walked none.
Brett Ash relieved Biesma in the sixth inning and gave up a run in the seventh. Washburn got it back on an RBI groundout from
Brent Matile that scored
John Calhoun. The Hawks got another run in the eighth and shut Washburn out the final two innings. The Ichabods had the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the ninth after Bean walked and Matile singled but the Ichabods couldn't convert.

Season Flashbacks: Don't Forget...
Done in a jiffy: The Ichabods set a school record since single-game statistics were first archived in 1999 by playing a 57-minute game April 6 against Missouri Southern. WU starter
Brett Ash threw 58 pitches and gave up three hits and no walks in the 3-0 win. MSSU starter Cody Griebling threw 58 pitches in the loss. Both threw complete games. There were three double plays and only three runners left on base between the two teams.
Ichabods get first four-game sweep since 2009: The Ichabods took all four games March 24-25 against Southwest Baptist for their first four-game sweep since 2009. The Ichabods also went on a six-game winning streak and it was their biggest streak since winning seven straight in 2006. Washburn's last four-game sweep was March 20 and 21 at home against Northwest Missouri.
Schachenmeyer earns MIAA pitcher of the week honor: Washburn senior pitcher
Kerry Schachenmeyer was named the MIAA pitcher of the week after throwing a shutout March 24 against SBU. Schachenmeyer shared the pitching award with Fort Hays State's Shawn Lewick. Schachenmeyer pitched a complete-game shutout as Washburn won 11-0 against Southwest Baptist as part of a four-game sweep. He allowed just three hits and struck out four. In the fourth inning, he allowed a single and then walked two to load the bases. He got the next batter to fly out to end the inning and leave all three on base. He allowed just one batter the final three innings with a hit-by-pitch.
Shutout leads Ash to MIAA pitcher of the week honor: Junior pitcher
Brett Ash threw a complete game shutout March 16 in Washburn's series opener at Truman to earn him MIAA pitcher of the week honor. Ash went nine innings against the Bulldogs and allowed six hits and a walk while striking out eight. He pitched out of a two-hit inning in the second and then in the fourth he allowed the bases to get loaded and got out of the inning with a strikeout. He pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to earn the complete game and shutout.
Ichabods update record books with offensive explosion: The Ichabods scored 17 runs and had 21 hits March 12 in the third game of their series at Pittsburg State. Since single-game records were kept in 1999, that's the sixth-highest hit total and the second-highest in an MIAA game. The Ichabods had 24 hits at Southwest Baptist on April 14, 2000. The six home runs Washburn hit was tied for the highest in school history. Washburn also hit six homers at SBU on April 14, 2006.
John Calhoun had six hits, tied for the second most in school history. He and
Richard Swan became the first pair of Ichabods to each hit two homers in the same game since single-game records were kept in 1999.
Up Next For The Ichabods
The Ichabods will finish their 11-game road trip with a doubleheader in Emporia on May 4 and then play two in Topeka on May 5 in what will be Senior Day for Washburn and the regular season finale.
