MARYVILLE, Mo. -- Washburn scored 18 runs off 26 hits in a doubleheader sweep Saturday at Northwest Missouri to open a four-game series. The Ichabods took the first game 6-5 and then won the second game 12-8. The two teams will complete the series Sunday with a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. The games were moved up an hour to avoid potential rain.

The Ichabods (22-20, 18-16 MIAA) snapped a six-game losing streak with a comeback win in the opener. The Bearcats scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to tie it at 5-5 but Washburn produced a run in the seventh. Brad Alberts hit an infield single and scored after three infield grounders moved him around the bases.

The Bearcats got the tying run to second with one out in the bottom of the seventh but failed to score to give Washburn the win.

The Ichabods trailed 3-0 after two Washburn errors cost starter Brett Ash (5-4) three unearned runs in the first inning. The Ichabods got them all back in the third on a two-run home run from John Calhoun that scored Richard Swan after he led off the inning with a single. Boone Plager and Brad Alberts followed with back-to-back singles and then Tyler Bean drove Plager in with a sacrifice fly.

Calhoun led off the fifth with a single, his third straight hit of the day, and scored on a double by Plager. Alberts then drove Plager in with a single up the middle to give Washburn a 5-3 lead. A two-run Bearcat homer tied it in the sixth before Washburn's winning run scored in the seventh.

Ash went the distance and gave up five runs, just two earned, off nine hits. He struck out five and walked two. Calhoun went 3 for 3 at the plate and scored twice with two RBI. Alberts was 3 for 4 at the plate.

The first seven hitters in Washburn's lineup each had two hits in their second game and the Ichabods had a 4-0 lead after the first inning and 7-0 lead after three innings. They added five more after that and led 12-3 before the Bearcats started a comeback with five runs in the seventh of the nine-inning game. Washburn starter Kerry Schachenmeyer gave up three hits and a walk to start the seventh and was pulled. The bullpen closed out the inning and kept NWMSU scoreless the final two innings to move Schachenmeyer's record to 6-2.

Blake Hageman had a two-run single in the first inning and an RBI groundout in the sixth to give him three RBI. Marcus Peavler also drove in three with singles in the fourth and sixth innings.

Calhoun went 5 for 7 in the two games with three walks and four runs scored. Alberts was 5 for 8 with three runs scored.
