TOPEKA, Kan. -- Washburn got three late runs in game one against Missouri Southern in a 3-0 win Friday at Falley Field and then kept pouring on the offense in a 12-5 win in the second game.
The Ichabods improved to 15-12 and 11-9 in the MIAA as they won their seventh and eighth straight games at home. The Lions fell to 19-13 and 12-12 in the league. The two teams will wrap up the four-game series with a doubleheader Saturday at noon.
Brett Ash went perfect on the mound through 4 1/3 innings in the opener for Washburn. After getting three runs from his offense in the sixth, he finished his fifth complete game and improved to 3-3 on the year. He gave up three hits and struck out six with no walks. His quick worked helped get the game over with in 57 minutes.
Each team had their first hits wiped out by double plays. The Ichabods got theirs in the second and the Lions got theirs in the fifth. MSSU starter Cody Griebling went the distance and kept the pitchers' dual going until Washburn broke through in the sixth.
Blake Hageman singled up the middle and then
Connor Crimmins hit a floater to right field. The fielder dove for it and missed and Hageman scored from first and Crimmins had his first triple of the year.
John Calhoun drove him in with a hit and then
Boone Plager moved Calhoun to third on a single.
Brad Alberts hit a sacrifice fly to right to drive in Calhoun and give Washburn its third run.
Ash gave up a hit to start the bottom of the seventh but retired the next three batters to give Washburn the win.
After the Lions took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first in the second game, Washburn scored three runs on four hits in the bottom of the first.
Marcus Peavler hit a two-run double, driving in Plager and Calhoun. Alberts was later driven in on a single from
Blaine Matthews.
MSSU got one in the top of the third and Washburn answered with five more in the bottom of the inning. Plager had a two-run single and Crimmins and Bean each drove in one on singles. Crimmins scored on a wild pitch.
Washburn added three more runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh and the Lions scored three in the seventh off three hits and an error.
Kerry Schachenmeyer went the first six innings for Washburn. He allowed two runs, both earned, off nine hits. He struck out two and walked two as he improved to 4-2 on the year.
Seth Huninghake worked the final three innings and earned his first save. He gave up three runs, one earned, off three hits, all in the seventh inning. He pitched a perfect eighth and ninth to close out the game.
Matthews went 4 for 5 in the second game with a pair of RBI. Plager drove in three off two hits. Washburn had 16 hits and the Lions pounded out 12.
