TOPEKA – The fifth-ranked Lady Blues spread out their offense and got a 25-12, 25-12, 25-19 sweep over Emporia State Tuesday in their home and MIAA opener. The win, in front of a Lee Arena regular season record crowd of 1,568 fans, was Washburn's 40th straight home win.
The Lady Blues (9-0) will continue MIAA action Friday at 7 p.m. at Truman.
Jessica Kopp and
Kelsey Lewis each had eight kills to lead Washburn.
Jessica Fey had seven and
Marissa Cox had six. Setter
Abby Wittman had 24 assists and took seven swings herself, getting four kills with no errors.
Hughes led Washburn with two aces and she and
Courtney Churchman led the back row with seven digs while Wittman had six. The Lady Blues hit .333 and the Hornets hit -.011 in the match. ESU edged Washburn in digs, 37-36 and both teams blocked five shots.
The Lady Blues held ESU to just 12 points in each of the first two sets. They scored 13 of their points in the first set off Hornet attack errors as Emporia State hit -.139 to start the match. Washburn started fast in the second set, leading 6-1 after three kills from Cox, two from Kopp and an ace from Hughes. Emporia State never rebounded and a 10-1 run later gave Washburn a 23-9 lead that put things out of reach. Washburn hit .467 in that set with just two attack errors.
Washburn scored first in the third set but a 3-2 lead for ESU was its first of the night. The Lady Blues responded with a 7-0 run that put them up 10-3. Lewis had three kills during that stretch. A 4-0 Emporia State run later made it 17-14 Washburn but a 4-1 run by the Lady Blues got them to 21 points and they later closed the match with a kill from Kopp.
Morgan Buckner led the Hornets with nine kills and she hit .467 in 15 attempts. She was one of just three ESU attackers to hit positive in the match.
Washburn's previous regular season record crowd was 1,564 against Emporia State on November 13, 2009. The two largest crowds in school history were during Washburn two matches in the 2007 NCAA national tournament that drew over 2,000 fans to the quarterfinal and semifinal.
