MARYVILLE, Mo. -- MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The third-ranked Lady Blues scored seven straight points in the fourth set Tuesday to clinch a comeback win at Northwest Missouri, 25-27, 25-16, 25-16, 25-17. Washburn improved to 13-0 in the non-conference match and will continue its three-match road trip Friday at 7 p.m. at Fort Hays State.
Marissa Cox had a hand in three of those final seven points with two kills and a block. The kills pushed her into double figures for the first time and gave her a career-high 11 for the match. She hit .526, topping .500 for the sixth time this year.
Washburn dropped the opening set 27-25 and then allowed just 16 points in each of the next two sets to go up 2-1. The fourth set had seven ties but Washburn never trailed after leading 2-0.
The Bearcats scored a kill to tie the fourth set at 9-9 but Washburn scored four of the next five and later led 18-13. Northwest Missouri (8-5) scored four straight to get within a point and Washburn coach
Chris Herron, who got his 399th career win, called timeout. The Lady Blues answered by clinching the match on a 7-0 run.
Cox started the run with a kill and ended it with a kill then an assisted block.
Jessica Kopp had two kills during the run and
Hillary Hughes, who served during the streak, had one kill.
Jessica Fey led Washburn with 15 kills and hit .393 while Kopp added 14 kills. Hughes finished with seven and led the Lady Blues with 17 digs.
Courtney Churchman had 14.
Abby Wittman directed the offense with 39 assists. Washburn blocked eight shots with Cox getting a hand on five and
Kelsey Lewis getting four.
The Lady Blues hit .252 and had 51 kills and 59 digs. Northwest Missouri hit .094 with 42 kills, 53 digs and four blocks. Abby Graves led the Bearcats with 12 kills.
The first set featured seven ties and six lead changes. A 5-0 run midway through gave Washburn its first lead at 13-12. The Bearcats then scored five of the next six to take the lead again and they eventually went up 22-18.
Washburn scored five straight to take a 23-22 lead and later got to set point after kills from Cox and then Fey. Three straight Northwest Missouri points then finished the match.
Washburn used a 9-0 run in the second set and 9-1 start in the third to take back the match lead.
Herron moved to 399-84 in 14 years of coaching college volleyball. He has 324 wins at Washburn and had 75 in three years at Benedictine before coming to Washburn. Last year he celebrated his 300th Washburn victory.
The Lady Blues' and Bearcats' match in Topeka on September 25 will count as an MIAA contest.
