BOLIVAR, Mo. -- The No. 7 Lady Blues swept Christian Brothers in their morning match Friday and then after a 42-minute power outage delay, went on to sweep Texas A&M-Kingsville in the first day of action at the Southwest Baptist Bearcat Bash. Washburn beat the Lady Bucs 25-16, 25-19, 25-17 and then took care of TAMUK 25-10, 25-16, 25-19 to move to 6-0 on the year.
The Lady Blues had just won two straight sets to open their match against the Javalinas and were taking the court for set three when a thunderstorm caused a power outage in the Meyer Sports Complex. The lights returned moments later but not all came back on and a fire alarm went off as the system reset itself. Officials decided to move the match to another court and after warming back up, the two teams returned to action.
Washburn had been cruising in the match after opening set two with an 11-0 lead.
Abby Wittman served all those points and
Hillary Hughes and
Jessica Kopp each had two kills during the steak. Kopp and
Marissa Cox partnered on three different blocks.
The third set was tied 1-1 before a 7-2 Lady Blues run gave them an 8-3 lead. Two straight kills from Kopp made it 15-8 and Washburn went on to win by six.
Hughes, Kopp and
Jessica Fey all had nine kills. Fey went error free in 15 attacks for a .600 attack percentage. Cox finished with eight kills, hit .636 and had four blocks.
Abby Wittman had a double-double with 21 assists and 11 digs.
Kelsey Washington and Dedra Brown each had seven kills for TAMUK but their team hit just .085 during the match. Washburn had a .273 attack percentage.
In the opening set Hughes finished with 16 kills and 13 digs against Christian Brothers for her 28th career double-double. She hit .452 and had three blocks. Cox hit .545 with eight kills and two errors in 11 tries.
Abby Wittman also had a double-double with 30 assists and 12 digs and
Courtney Churchman had 13 digs. Fey got her hand on five of Washburn's 10 blocks.
After a 7-7 tie in the first set, the Lady Blues went on a 9-1 run to go up 16-8. Hughes had four kills during the streak.The Lady Bucs scored three straight to get within five but Washburn answered with five straight with Kopp getting two straight kills and Hughes added two more. Freshman
Rebecca Maasen later ended the set with a kill.
The second set was tight early as well but a 7-1 run midway through it gave Washburn a 19-11 lead.
Kelsey Lewis, who had five kills, ended the set with a kill. A 5-0 run late in the third set helped Washburn pull away for the sweep.
Washburn hit .282 in the match while CBU had a .099 attack percentage. The Lady Blues dug up 53 attacks while Christian Brothers had 47. Hannah Kurtz led the Lady Bucs with 10 kills and Kristina Headrick had 12 digs.
