Late first half spurt helps Lady Blues run away with 29-point win at Nebraska-Kearney

KEARNEY, Neb. -- A 9-0 run in under a minute late in the first half pushed the 12th-ranked Lady Blues to a double-digit lead at Nebraska-Kearney Saturday and they ran away with a 29-point win, 74-45 Saturday in the Health and Sports Center. The game was Washburn's first against UNK since the 2001-02 season as the Lopers are playing their first season in the MIAA.

The Lady Blues won their fourth straight and improved to 10-2 overall and 4-0 in the MIAA while the Lopers fell to 4-9 and 1-5 in the league. Washburn wrapped up a three-game road trip and will return to Lee Arena Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. against Truman.

Laura Kinderknecht hit two 3-pointers during Washburn's quick run before halftime and finished with a game-high 19 points. She was 8 of 12 from the field overall and 3 of 6 from long range. Stormye Everett tied her career high with 13 points as she went 4 of 8 from the field with two 3-pointers. Lavonda McCall had 10 pooints with a 4 of 5 performance from the field.

Kinderknecht hit a 3-pointer with 1:04 to go in the first half and then Everett hit a 3 with 22 seconds to go. Casyn Buchman got a backcourt steal and passed it to Kinderknecht who hit a 3 with three seconds in the half.

Washburn shot 58 percent in the first half from the field and 4 of 7 from 3-point range. Kinderknecht went 7 of 9 for 16 points in the first half. Everett scored eight points off 3 of 5 shooting.

The Lady Blues ended up shooting exactly 50 percent (28 of 56), reaching that mark for the first time since the second  game of the year. Nebraska-Kearney shot 35 percent and had 20 turnovers while Washburn had 12. Washburn scored 27 points off turnovers.

A layup from McCall five minutes into the second half gave the Lady Blues a 21-point lead and they kept it over 20 the rest of the way. Washburn's lead was never less than 25 the final 10 minutues and a layup from Bianca Fennessee at 1:58 made the lead a game-high 29.

McCall led Washburn with seven rebounds and Dana Elliott led with four assists. Washburn won the rebound battle 40-31 and had seven blocks while UNK had two.

Shelby Zimmerman was the only Loper in double figures as she scored 11 off a 5 of 10 performance. Melissa Norman had eight rebounds.
