No. 10 Ichabods look to rebound against new conference foe

Pregame
The No. 10-ranked Washburn Ichabods will hit the road for the first of three consecutive road games beginning at new MIAA foe Northeastern State on Saturday in Talequah, Okla. The Ichabods (10-3, 3-2 MIAA) are coming off a 64-56 home loss to Truman while the RiverHawks (11-4, 4-3 MIAA) snapped a three-game slide winning at Central Oklahoma 80-71 last time out.

'Bod Quick notes
• The Ichabods are in a stretch of six of seven games on the road to open MIAA play.
• The Ichabods will return home on Jan. 31 to face Missouri Southern in only their third home game in the month of January.
• The 56 points in the loss to Truman last time out was the fewest points the Ichabods had scored in a game in Lee Arena since scoring 57 in a home win over Central Missouri on Dec. 31, 2010 in a 57-45 victory.
• The RiverHawks and the Ichabods have only met once - in the NCAA regional second round game on March 15, 2003 in Stephenville, Texas - with NSU winning 64-59.
• The .537 (22-41) field goal percentage by Truman was the highest by an Ichabod opponent this season.

Will McNeill record his 21st career game with at least four steals recording five against Truman last time out giving him 208 on his career.
• The Truman game was the first time since Feb. 23, 2011 the Ichabods had lost a game at home after leading at the half. Washburn led Emporia State 35-33 before losing 67-61 in Lee Arena.
• Truman became the first team to shoot over 50 percent against the Ichabods (22-41/.537) since Missouri Southern hit half its shots against the Ichabods on Feb. 15, 2012.
• Prior to the 64-56 Ichabod loss to Truman, Washburn was averaging 83.1 ppg.

Last time out for the Ichabods • Truman 64, #10 Washburn 56 • 1/16/13
TOPEKA, Kan. -- Back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers by Truman spelled disaster as the Bulldogs knocked off the No. 10-ranked Washburn Ichabods at home in a 64-56 loss on Schendel Court at Lee Arena. 
The start of the game could not have gone much better for the Ichabods as they jumped out to a 10-0 lead 4:20 into the game and Truman did not score until 10 seconds after that for its first points of the game. Washburn led the entire first half taking a 28-25 lead into the halftime break behind 46 percent shooting from the field while the Bulldogs (6-9, 3-4 MIAA) were held to 40 percent.
In the second half, Washburn built a lead of six at 34-29 with 18:23 to play and it wasn't until the 14:21 mark until the Bulldogs took their first lead of the game at 36-35. The teams traded baskets to exchange the lead four times but a 3-pointer by Cole Myers jump started a 13-1 Bulldog run over the next 3:24 pushing Truman out to an 11-point lead at 52-41 with 7:34 to play. 
The Ichabods would counter with a 12-3 run over their own over the next 2:35 of the game to cut the Bulldog lead back to two at 55-53 but would get no closer as Truman pushed the lead back to the final margin of eight outscoring Washburn the final 2:14 of the game for its first win in Topeka since an 81-72 win on Jan. 28, 2006 snapping a streak of six straight games while improving to 5-26 all-time in Topeka.
Washburn was led by Will McNeill who scored 20 points adding five steals, five rebounds and three assists going 8 of 11 from the free throw line. Martin Mitchell finished with 13 points. Bobby Chipman led the Ichabods with seven rebounds.
Truman shot a blistering 67 percent in the second half hitting 6 of 9 shots from 3-point range in the second half propelling themsevles to the win finishing 8 of 16 from behind the arc. Washburn fishing 10 of 34 in the second half including 0 of 6 from 3-point range finishing 21 of 58 for 36 percent from the field and 3 of 13 from 3-point range.
Tom Norton came off the bench to score 15 including 4 of 5 shooting from 3-point range. Seth Jackson had 13 points.
Washburn scored 23 points of 18 Truman turnovers while only committing nine turnovers on the night. 

Series history with Northeastern State
• The RiverHawks lead the all-time series 1-0.
• The Ichabods and RiverHawks played in the second round of the NCAA Tournament with Washburn falling 64-59 on March 15, 2003 in Stephenville, Texas.

Last Time out for Truman
(Jan. 16, 2013) -- EDMOND, Okla. – The Northeastern State men's basketball team defeated Central Oklahoma 80-71 Wednesday night at Hamilton Field House.
The RiverHawks (11-4, 4-3 MIAA) snapped a three-game losing skid, while also halting the Bronchos (6-9, 4-3 MIAA) recent three-game win streak. Northeastern State earned its first win over UCO in Edmond since Feb. 4, 2009.
Senior forward Jermaine Bransford paced NSU with 22 points and nine rebounds, while playing all 40 minutes. He was 8-for-10 from the field and 6 of 7 at the free-throw line.
Junior forward Marcus Sheppard made four shots from distance and recorded a career-best 20 points. Junior guard Bryton Hobbs was 13-for-13 from the free-throw line and finished with 19 points, five rebounds, four steals and three assists. Senior guard Ethan Anderson added 10 points.
NSU shot 48 percent from the field (22-for-46), 28 percent from behind the arc (5-for-18) and 86 percent from the charity stripe (31-for-36). The 31 made free throws was the most in a game by Northeastern State since Jan. 13, 2010 against Cameron.
The Bronchos were led by Josh Gibbs, who scored 18 points. Spencer Smith contributed 12 and Christian Huffman came off the bench to add 11.
UCO shot 49 percent from the field (25-for-51), 22 percent from downtown (4-for-18) and 74 percent from the line (17-for-23).
The RiverHawks outrebounded their opponents 30-23, and both teams recorded 11 turnovers and nine assists. Darnell Hinson had 20 to lead Northeastern State.

Last meeting with Northeastern State
(March 15, 2003) STEPHENVILLE, Texas -- The Washburn Ichabods lost in the second round of the NCAA Tournament falling 64-59 to Northeastern State. Washburn finishes the season with a 26-6 record. 
Washburn trailed by three at the half 32-29 while hitting on 9 of 30 field goal attempts while NSU was 11 of 25 from the field. In the second half the Ichabods improved to 42 percent hitting 11 of 26 shots but were only 5 of 8 from the free throw line compared to Northeastern State going 17 of 22 from the charity stripe.
Manny Clifton scored 17 points off the bench to lead the Ichabods while Troy Douglas scored 12. Ryan Murphy had nine points and 11 rebounds.

Will McNeill was named a preseason All-American by the Basketball Times. He is the first Ichabod to receive preseason All-American honors since Travis Robbins prior to the 2004-05 season.
Will McNeill has been named the MIAA Player of the Week twice on Nov. 26 and on Dec. 3. 
• The Ichabods are +12.9 in scoring margin this season.

Will McNeill is 36 assists shy of becoming the sixth Ichabod to reach at least 1,000 points and 200 assists joining Tom Meier (2,082/242), Greg Wilson (1,323/295), Mike Dickerson (1,130/214), Todd Alexander (1,099/215) and Shannon Kruger (1,014/341). He enters the Truman game with 1,389 points and 161 assists.
