No. 13 Ichabods continue road adventure at FHSU

Pregame
The No. 13-ranked Washburn Ichabods look to rebound from their first loss of the MIAA slate as they continue a three-game roadtrip at Fort Hays State (9-3, 3-1 MIAA) on Thursday. The Ichabods (8-2, 1-1 MIAA) are coming off a 72-67 loss at Central Oklahoma where they trailed by as many as 22 in the first half before cutting the margin to three in the second half. The Tigers trailed at Emporia State with 3:30 to go in the game and rallied to win 79-76 in overtime over the Hornets bouncing back from a 76-61 loss at Northeastern State.

Washburn Ichabod head basketball coach Bob Chipman 
• He is in his 34th season at the helm of the Ichabods.
• Ichabod head coach Bob Chipman is a 1973 graduate of Kansas State earning both his undergraduate and master's degree in Manhattan.
• He is 729-298 overall.
• He has 488 wins since the Ichabods joined the MIAA, the most of any conference school since the 1989-90 season.
• Has led the Ichabods to 12 MIAA regular season titles and a MIAA-coaching tops of five postseason tournament championships.

Fort Hays State head coach Mark Johnson . . .

• Johnson became just the third coach in FHSU history to reach 200 wins in men's basketball on February 5, 2011 with a win over Washburn in Hays. 
• He joined Cade Suran (257) and Bill Morse (235) as the only coaches to reach 200 wins at FHSU. 
• Johnson is the second-fastest to 200 wins among the three, as Morse reached the mark in just 241 games, while Johnson did it in 285 games.

EDMOND, Okla. -- The No. 8 Washburn made a furious comeback in the second half to put itself in a position to win but came up short in a 72-67 loss at Central Oklahoma. Washburn returns to action at Fort Hays State on Thursday.
After trailing by as many as 22 in the first half, the Ichabods used a 30-15 from the 17-minute mark of the game down to the 7:20 mark turning a 43-26 deficit into a three-point deficit at 58-55 after a Kyle Wiggins' layup.
Wiggins would score on another lay up cutting the to 61-58 on a traditional three-point play with 6:04 left. UCO responded putting the lead back to seven twice before a Martin Mitchell lay up cut the lead back to five at 67-62 with 3:20 to play. Mitchell hit another jumper to to cut the margin back to four at 68-64 with 2:07 left and after a UCO pair of free throws with 1:46 to play Will McNeill hit a pair of his own cutting it back to a four-point deficit but they would get no closer as UCO held on for the win. The Ichabods outscored the Bronchos 45 to 30 in the second half after being outscored 42 to 22 in the opening half.
In the first half, the Ichabods trailed by 20 at 42-22 as the Ichabods were 5 of 25 from the field including a 1 of 10 performance from behind the arch.Washburn was limited to three field goals in the final nine-plus minutes of the first half. UCO led by as many as 22 in the opening half as the Bronchos were 16 of 26 from the field including 4 of 9 from 3-point range. UCO also held a 19 to 14 advantage on the glass forcing seven Ichabod turnovers leading to 12 UCO points. Washburn was 11 of 15 from the free throw line compared to 6 of 12 for UCO.
Mitchell scored 21 coming off a 23-point performance against Emporia State last time out. Wiggins scored a career-high 17 in the game and McNeill finished with 14 going 12 of 14 from the free throw line. Washburn was outrebounded 45-35 in the game and outscored 30 to 10 in the paint by UCO.
Josh Gibbs led UCO with 16 points adding 10 rebounds.
Washburn finished 17 of 60 from the field for the game including 6 of 26 from 3-point range while going 27 of 36 from the free throw line. UCO finished 23 of 50 from the field and 20 of 36 from the free throw line. 

Series history with Fort Hays State
• Washburn leads the all-time series 86-66 and Thursday's meeting will be the 155th in between the two schools. 
• The Ichabods have won the last three in the series.
• The series is the third-most played for Washburn behind Emporia State (202) and Pittsburg State (175).

About Fort Hays State
• The Tigers are 9-3 and 3-1 in the MIAA and have won seven of their last eight games.
• They had a six-game winning streak snapped on Jan. 3 at Northeastern State.
• The Tigers topped Emporia State last time out 79-76 in overtime.
• FHSU is led by Dwayne Brunson who leads four Tigers in double figures with 15.1 ppg while also leading in rebounding at 8.3 per game.
• Lance Russell (13.6 ppg), Ben Congiusta (13.5 ppg) and Craig Nicholson (12.7 ppg) are also averaging double digits.
• Nicholson, a freshman from Wichita, also leads the team and the MIAA with 6.9 assists per game.

Last time out for Fort Hays State
(Jan. 5, 2013) -- EMPORIA, Kan. -- Fort Hays State erased a 10-point deficit in the last 3:30 of regulation and went on to win 79-76 in overtime to move to 9-3 overall and 3-1 in the MIAA. Ben Congiusta buried a 3-point field goal with just over two seconds remaining to force the extra period. It was the second straight year the Tigers won in overtime in Emporia.
The run began with a pair of Craig Nicholson to cut the lead to eight with 2:39 remaining, then Congiusta hit a 3-pointer with 1:17 remaining to cut the lead to ESU lead to five. The lead shrunk to three on a Nicholson layup with 1:08 remaining and then he had a floater near the lane with 22 seconds left to cut it to one. After an ESU layup on an inbounds with nine seconds left, FHSU did not have any timeouts remaining. Nicholson found a trailing Congiusta on the play who buried a 3-point field goal to force overtime. ESU was 0-of-4 from the field and had two turnovers in the FHSU run until getting the layup with nine seconds left.
Lance Russell put the Tigers out front with the first basket of the overtime period and Congiusta buried his fourth 3-point field goal of the game to push the lead to five. FHSU held ESU off the rest of the way as a pair of Nicholson free-throws with 25 seconds put the lead back at three. ESU missed two late 3-point attempts and fouled Marty Wendel with three seconds left. Wendel could not put the game away on the first free-throw, but ESU could not get a shot off at the end as FHSU escaped with the thrilling win.
The win gave Mark Johnson the 235th win of his career at FHSU, tying Bill Morse for second all-time in wins at FHSU. 
Dwayne Brunson led FHSU with a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds. Lance Russell and Congiusta each finished with 16 points and Nicholson added 15. The Tigers finished the game at 47.4 percent from the field and 38.9 percent beyond the 3-point line.
The Hornets (5-6, 0-3 MIAA) were red-hot from the field all game long and finished at 50.9 percent for the game. They were led in scoring by Chris Sights with 16 points, followed by Paul Bunch and Kaleb Wright each with 13. Terrence Moore had 11 and Tre Boutilier added 10.

Last meeting with Fort Hays State
(March 3, 2012) KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods advanced to their first MIAA Tournament finals since the 2010 season after defeating Fort Hays State 67-54 in Municipal Auditorium. 
The Ichabods led at the break 31-29 after shooting 46 percent in the half while the Tigers were 10 of 24 from the floor hitting 5 of 15 3-point attempts. There were four ties and four lead changes in the first stanza.
With Washburn leading 33-31 in the second half with 18:51 to play, the Ichabods put together a 15-2 run over the next seven minutes in which the Ichabods hit six of seven from the field pulling out to a 15-point lead and the Tigers would not get closer than 12 with just over a minute to play.
The Ichabods were led by Will McNeill who scored 12 of his game-high 23 points in the second half. He finished 8 of 12 from the floor hitting 6 of 8 free throws. Zack Riggins joined McNeill in double digits with 10 points. Martin Mitchell scored seven with a career-high six rebounds and Bobby Chipman scored six with seven rebounds.
Kendrick Morese scored 13 to lead the Tigers.
Washburn shot 61 percent in the second half connecting on 13 of 21 shots finishing 26 of 49 attempts from the field for a 53 percent average. The Tigers were 8 of 27 from the field in the second half going 8 of 51 for the game.

Bod bits
Will McNeill was named a preseason All-American by the Basketball Times. He is the first Ichabod to receive preseason All-American honors since Travis Robbins prior to the 2004-05 season.
Will McNeill has been named the MIAA Player of the Week twice on Nov. 26 and on Dec. 3. 
• The Ichabods are +15.6 in scoring margin this season.
• The three freshman on the Ichabod roster (Khai Hutchinson, Evan Robinson and Colton Anderson) are all redshirting this season.
• Zach Riggins missed the Emporia State game with a foot injury and returned to the starting line up against Central Oklahoma.
• With four more rebounds, Will McNeill will become the first Ichabod to record at least 1,000 points (1,359); 400 rebounds (396), 200 steals (201) and 150 assists (152) in a career.
Will McNeill is 48 assists shy of becoming the sixth Ichabod to reach at least 1,000 points and 200 assists joining Tom Meier (2,082/242), Greg Wilson (1,323/295), Mike Dickerson (1,130/214), Todd Alexander (1,099/215) and Shannon Kruger (1,014/341).

Washburn will continue its three-game road stretch after facing Fort Hays State with a Jan. 12 date with MIAA-newcomer Nebraska-Kearney. Washburn will return home to take on Truman on Jan. 16 before starting another three-game trip with contests at Northeastern State on Jan. 19, at Lincoln on Jan. 24 and at Lindenwood on Jan. 26. Washburn will then finish the regular season with seven of its final 10 regular season games at home starting on Jan. 31 with Missouri Southern.
