Ichabods to face Bronchos in MIAA Tournament semifinals

MIAA Tournament Soccer Notes vs Central Oklahoma | Live Stats for WU-UCO match

First touch
• The Washburn Ichabod soccer team will take on Central Oklahoma in the semifinals of the MIAA Tournament on Friday at 4 p.m. in Olathe, Kan. at the College Boulevard Activities Complex.
• The Ichabods, who are the No. 4 seed, topped Nebraska-Kearney winning a shootout 4-2 in the quarterfinals in Topeka on Tuesday night.
• The Ichabods are making their first MIAA semifinals appearance.
• The Bronchos, who are seeded eighth, defeated the No. 1 seeded Central Missouri Jennies 3-1 to advance to the semifinals.
• Washburn and Central Oklahoma played each other on Nov. 1 in Edmond and the Bronchos defeated the Ichabods 3-0.
• The Ichabods' regular season fourth-place finish was ahead of the 10th-place from the preseason coaches poll.
• The winner of the Washburn/Central Oklahoma match will play in the championship match which is slated for 11 a.m. on Nov. 10 in Olathe.
• In the other semifinal, the No. 7 seeded Emporia State Hornets advanced by beating the No. 2 seeded Northeastern State RiverHawks 3-0. 
• The Hornets will face the No. 3 seeded Southwest Baptist Bearcats, who beat Lindenwood 2-1.
• Washburn's nine wins this season is the most since the Ichabods had 11 during the 2009 season.

What's in a name
• Starting this season all of the women's athletic teams will be called Ichabods.
• All women's teams prior to the 2013-14 school year can and will be referenced to as Lady Blues.
• Name change was made to have a unified athletic department and to have a graphical representation of the sports teams at Washburn.
• 'Bods is allowable on second reference
• Lady Ichabods or Lady 'Bods should never be used.

Noting Central Oklahoma
• The Bronchos are 8-9-2 this season and finished 4-5-2 in MIAA play this season.
• Sarah Purcell leads the team with nine goals and 19 points overall.
• Emily Hahn has three goals with four assists.
• Emily Thornbrugh has a 1.14 goal against average with a 6-7-1 overall record and four shutouts.
• The Bronchos have outscored their opponents 14 to 7 in the first half.  

Last time out for Central Oklahoma
(11/5/2013) WARRENSBURG, Mo. (Nov. 5) – Sarah Purcell scored a career-high three goals and Brandi Bartley made a career-best 10 saves to lead Central Oklahoma to a stunning 3-1 upset of No. 12-ranked Central Missouri here Tuesday in the first round of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Postseason Tournament.
The eighth-seeded Bronchos, who lost a 3-0 home decision to the regular season champion Jennies Oct. 18, ended UCM's seven-game winning streak in advancing to Friday's semifinals in Olathe, Kan.
The two semifinal winners meet Sunday for the tournament title and the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Division II national tournament.
Central Missouri fell to 14-3-2 and will have to wait and see if it earns an at-large berth into the playoffs.
Purcell raced through the UCM defense to score an unassisted goal just 1:07 into the contest to give the Bronchos a quick 1-0 lead, though the Jennies came back to tie it four minutes later.
Purcell struck again in the 18th minute when the junior forward knocked in a shot off a deflected cross to break the tie and put the Bronchos on top 2-1. Purcell capped her dominating performance at the 68:55 mark with a header off a ball that got knocked in the air in front of the goal.
Central Missouri outshot the Bronchos 17-8, but Bartley was up the task as the junior goalkeeper rejected 10 of 11 shots on goal. She had four saves in the first half and six in the second, including two in the final 15 minutes after UCO had taken its two-goal lead.

Series history with Central Oklahoma
• UCO leads the all-time series 3-1-1.
• Washburn's lone win came in a 4-3 win in Wichita in a 4-3 win on Sept. 10, 2008.
• The Ichabods are 0-2 in matches played in Edmond.
•  Washburn has been outscored 15 to 8 by the Bronchos in the five matches.

Last meeting with Central Oklahoma
(11/1/2013) EDMOND, Okla. -- Two first half goals by the host team was too much to overcome as the Ichabod soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to Central Oklahoma
The Bronchos scored in the seventh minute when Sarah Purcell scored her sixth goal of the season on an assist from Chandler Murphy from 8-yards out on a breakaway goal. UCO added another prior to the half in the 40th minute when Kate Foran followed up a missed shot putting UCO up 2-0.
UCO added its final goal in the 55th minute when Caitlin Bond scored from close range wrapping up the scoring in the match.
The Ichabods were outshot 17 to 5 including 9 to 2 in the second half. UCO also had eight corner kicks compared to three for Washburn.
Caysie Beetley had three shots to lead Washburn and Sophia Sabala recorded the only shot on goal for the Ichabods. Tori Fuglister had seven saves in net for Washburn.

Last time out for Washburn
(11/5/2013) TOEPKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabod soccer team advanced into the semifinals of the MIAA Tournament with a 4-2 penalty kick win over Nebraska-Kearney. Washburn will take on Central Oklahoma in Olathe on Friday at 4 p.m. 
After the teams each recorded goals in the first seven minutes, the remaining 103-plus minutes were scoreless. Washburn scored first when Caysie Beetley scored her fourth goal of the season from 10-yards out off an assist from Cadence Bourne. The Lopers wasted little time scoring just under three minutes later when McKinzie Rieber scored her third goal of the season off an assist from Becka Talcott as the team entered the half tied at 1-1.
In the second half, neither scored as the Lopers had a 7 to 1 advantage in shots. After 90 minutes, the teams remained tied and it was still tied after two 10-minute overtime periods sending it to a shootout.
The Lopers went first and Becka Tacott scored on her attempt past Washburn's Tori Fuglister. Washburn's Lara Doescher connected on Washburn's first attempt tying the PK session 1-1. Holly Brown sent her shot wide right for the Lopers and Washburn would then go up 2-1 after Beetley's shot found the back of the net. Breezy Jahnke connected on the Lopers' next attempt tying the score back at 2-2, but it was short lived as Rachel Hansen's attempt sailed past the Lopers' Katelin Mielke in net. Kristyn Otter's attempt to Fuglister's right was stopped by an outstretched hand and then Devon Schmitz wrapped up the win sending her shot into the goal and the Ichabods to Olathe.
The tie (as it's recorded by the NCAA) was the first time the Ichabods had advanced in the postseason in penalty kicks since a Nov. 3, 2006 win over Missouri Southern in the NCAA Tournament.

The winner of the Washburn/Central Oklahoma game will take on the winner of the Southwest Baptist/Emporia State match in the MIAA championship game at 11 a.m. on Nov. 10 with the winner receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Soccer Tournament.
