No. 25 Ichabods return to action facing Griffons for 2nd time in a week

Pregame
The No. 25-ranked Washburn Ichabods will face Missouri Western for the second time in a week when they travel to St. Joseph, Mo., to face the Griffons on Wednesday night at 7:30 at the MWSU Field House. The Griffons (9-12, 5-8 MIAA) topped the Ichabods on Feb. 6 in Topeka in a 79-74 win. After taking on the Griffons, Washburn will travel to Maryville, Mo., to face Northwest Missouri for the second time in seven days on Feb. 16 at 3:30 p.m. before returning home for three of their final four regular season game. Central Missouri and Fort Hays State lead the MIAA standings at 9-4 while Washburn is in third at 8-4. Lindenwood, Northwest Missouri and Central Oklahoma are all 8-5 in the conference race. Lindenwood is ineligible for the MIAA tournament and NCAA postseason as they are in their final year of transition to the Division II ranks. The top four teams in the final standings receives a bye to Kansas City for the conference tournament while the final 5-8 seeds will host the final 9-12 with the winners advancing to Kansas City.

Last time out for the Ichabods • #17 Washburn 80, Northwest Missouri 67 •  2/9/13
TOPEKA, Kan. -- The No. 17-ranked Washburn Ichabods shot a smoking 63 percent in the second half en route to a 57 percent performance for the game as Washburn topped Northwest Missouri 80-67 on Schendel Court at Lee Arena on Saturday night. 
With the Ichabods (15-4, 8-4 MIAA) up one at 21-20 with 4:45 to play in the half, a Martin Mitchell 3-pointer started a 13-4 run to end the period sending the Ichabods to the locker room with a 34-22 lead over Northwest (15-7, 8-5 MIAA).
To start the second half, the Ichabods came out on a 13-2 run over the first 4:21 of play to open up a 47-24 lead for their biggest lead of the night at 23.
Washburn kept the Bearcats at arms-length until the Bearcats finished the game on a 9-0 run over the final 53 seconds to pull within 13 at the buzzer.
Mitchell led the Ichabods with 20 points on 8 of 11 shooting overall going 4 of 6 from 3-point range adding four rebounds and four assists.
Will McNeill had 16 points to go with four rebounds, three assists and two steals becoming the sixth Ichabod to score at least 1,000 points while dishing out 200 career assists. Christian Ulsaker and 11 points hitting all seven free throw attempts and Kyle Wiggins finished with 10 points.
Kyler Erickson had 17 points off the bench to lead the Bearcats. Grant Cozad had 13 off the bench and DeAngelo Hailey had 12.
Washburn finished at 57 percent from the field while limiting the Bearcats to 21 of 59 shooting for the game. The Bearcats did have a 34 to 28 advantage on the glass converting 19 offensive rebounds to 25 second chance points. The Northwest bench also outscored the Ichabod bench 48-21.

Series history with Missouri Western
• Wednesday's meeting will be the 83rd meeting between the two schools with Washburn leading the series 47-35. 
• The Ichabods are 23-20 against MWSU in MIAA games and 20-10 in Lee Arena. 
• The Ichabods snapped a four-game losing streak in games played in St. Joseph, in their last visit on Jan. 28, 2012. 
• In the MIAA Tournament the Ichabods are 3-4 against the Griffons. Since joining the MIAA, the Ichabods are 8-17 in MIAA games played in St. Joseph. The series is tied a 4-4 in overtime games.

Last meeting with MIssouri Western
(Feb. 6, 2013) TOPEKA, Kan. -- Martin Mitchell scored 20 first half points en route to a career-high 32 but it was not enough as the No. 17-ranked Washburn Ichabods fell to Missouri Western 79-74. 
Both team shot above 50 percent in the first half as the Ichabods (14-5, 7-4 MIAA) were 13 of 26 from the field hitting 6 of 13 3-point attempts while the Griffons (9-12, 5-8 MIAA) were 13 of 24 going 4 of 9 from 3-point range hitting 54 percent of their shots as the Ichabods took a 40-36 lead into the halftime break. Washburn trailed by as many as nine in the first half at 16-9, but used a 10-0 over a 60 second stretch to take a three-point lead. Jared Henry scored five points during the stretch. Again the Griffons pushed out to a nine-point lead at 32-23 before MItchell would hit four straight 3-pointers on consecutive trips down the court to put Washburn up 35-32 as they would hold for the four-point lead at the break.
Out of the break, the Ichabods would score four straight by Joseph Smith to build a six-point lead and Washburn stretched its lead out to as may as nine points with 11:28 to play before a 9-2 Griffon run cut the lead to two with 8:22 to play.
Washburn led by three at 67-64 with 4:15 to play but Western finished the game on a 15-7 run to end the game snapping Washburn's four-game winning streak over the Griffons.
Mitchell's 32 points were the most by an Ichabod since Will McNeill scored 34 against Bellevue earlier this season. He became the first Ichabod to hit seven 3-pointers in a game since Eric Carter hit seven against Lincoln on Dec. 18, 1999. McNeill finished with 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds recording his seventh career double double and his fourth of the season. Joseph Smith had 11 points marking his first start of the season. Kyle Wiggins and McNeill each had six assists as well.
Reed Mells led six Griffons in double figures with 18 points. It was the first time a team had recorded six double figure scorers against the Ichabods since Northwest Missouri did on March 7, 2004. 
The Griffons finished with a 58 percent shooting mark hitting for 62 percent in the second half connecting on 26 of 45 attempts including a 10 of 20 performance from behind the 3-point line. 
Washburn shot 46 percent for the game going 25 of 55 from the field but cooled off in the second half hitting only 2 of 11 3-point attempts. Washburn held a 32 to 25 advantage on the glass collecting 15 offensive rebounds leading to 18 second chance points.

• MWSU has not played since last week's game against Washburn.
• The Griffons are 9-12 overall and 5-8 in MIAA games.
• Missouri Western has lost its last two games in home losses to Pittsburg State (57-56) and Northeastern State (73-61) and five of its last seven overall.

Will McNeill was named a preseason All-American by the Basketball Times. He is the first Ichabod to receive preseason All-American honors since Travis Robbins prior to the 2004-05 season.
Will McNeill has been named the MIAA Player of the Week twice on Nov. 26 and on Dec. 3. 
• The Ichabods are +10.8 in scoring margin this season.
• The three freshman on the Ichabod roster (Khai Hutchinson, Evan Robinson and Colton Anderson) are all redshirting this season.
Bryce Simons has missed the entire season with a knee injury.
Alex North suffered a knee injury against Central Oklahoma and missed the last nine games and is likely heading for a medical redshirt as he's played in only five games this season after suffering a concussion against Bethany on Nov. 19.
Will McNeill became the sixth Ichabod to reach at least 1,000 points and 200 assists joining Tom Meier (2,082/242), Greg Wilson (1,323/295), Mike Dickerson (1,130/214), Todd Alexander (1,099/215) and Shannon Kruger (1,014/341) after he recorded three assists giving him 202 for his career to go along with his 1,518 points.
• McNeill also became only the second Ichabod to score at least 1,500 points and 200 assists joining Tom Meier (2,082/242).
• With 41 more rebounds, McNeill would become the ninth Ichabod to have at least 1,000 points and 500 rebounds.
• With 41 more rebounds, McNeill would become the first Ichabod to have at least 1,500 points, 500 rebounds, 200 assists and 200 steals.

Ichabods in the national rankings
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods dropped from No. 17 to No. 25 in the latest NABC Top 25 coaches poll which was released today. The Ichabods return to action on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Missouri Western.The Ichabods were 1-1 last week falling to Missouri Western in Topeka while topping Northwest Missouri on Saturday. The Ichabods and the Bearcats will have a rematch as well on Saturday in Maryville. The Ichabods have been in the top 25 a total of 98 times since joining the NCAA ranks and they have been voted in the top 10 a total of 51 times since the 1989-90 season. The Ichabods are the only MIAA squad ranked in the top 25.

Home sweet home
• The Ichabods are 372-68 (.848) all-time in Lee Arena.
• The 2012-13 season marks the 28th season of play in Lee Arena.

On Feb. 16 the Ichabods will take the Bearcats on the road in Maryville facing the NWMSU for the second time in a week. Washburn will return home on Feb. 21 to face Nebraska-Kearney and then Fort Hays State on Feb. 23. Washburn's final regular season away game will be at Emporia State on Feb. 28 and they will wrap up the regular season at home on senior night against Central Missouri in the MIAA's TV game of the week.
