No. 25 Ichabods travel Saturday to face Northwest Missouri

Pregame
The No. 25-ranked Washburn Ichabods will look to stay in the MIAA title hunt as they will take on Northwest Missouri for the second time in a week on Saturday in Maryville. The Ichabods (16-5, 9-4 MIAA) are coming off a 56-52 overtime win over Missouri Western while the Bearcats (15-8, 8-6 MIAA) lost at home to Fort Hays State 64-60 on Wednesday. Washburn topped the Bearcats on Feb. 9 in Topeka 80-67. In the league race, Central Missouri and Fort Hays State lead the MIAA standings at 10-4 while Washburn is in third at 9-4. Northeastern State is in fourth with a 10-5 record while Central Oklahoma is in fifth at 9-5. Lindenwood and Northwest Missouri are tied for sixth at 8-6. Lindenwood is ineligible for the MIAA tournament and NCAA postseason as they are in their final year of transition to the Division II ranks. The top four teams in the final standings receives a bye to Kansas City for the conference tournament while the final 5-8 seeds will host the final 9-12 with the winners advancing to Kansas City.

'Bod Quick notes
• With the win over the Griffons, the Ichabods clinched a spot in the MIAA Tournament.
• The first Ichabod basket of the game against the Griffons at the 16:50 mark of the first half was the longest scoring drought to start the game this season.
• The overtime win snapped a six-game losing streak in extra time basketball games as it was the first overtime win for the Ichabods since a 71-68 overtime win over Central Oklahoma on Dec. 4, 2007.

Will McNeill recorded his second double double against Missouri Western in a week after going for 16 points and 10 rebounds in the first meeting and then recording 19 points and 11 rebounds in the win on Wednesday.
• The 16 points scored by the Ichabods in the first half against Missouri Western were the fewest since scoring 24 at home against Emporia State on Jan. 3.
Will McNeill needs three steals to break the Washburn senior class record of 63 held by Jordy Canfield.
• The last time the Ichabods were held in the teens in a half was the third game of the 2011-12 season against Cameron when they scored 19.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- The No. 25-ranked Washburn Ichabods grinded out a gutty 56-52 overtime win over Missouri Western improving to 16-5 and 9-4 in the MIAA.
After trailing by 11 at the break at 27-16, the Ichabods started the second half on a 15-2 run over the first 6:37 of the period to take a 31-29 lead on a lay up by Bobby Chipman. Neither team would lead by more than three until the Griffons (9-13, 5-9 MIAA) pushed out to a 5-point at 41-36 with 8:14 to play, but back-to-back 3-pointers by Martin Mitchell and Jared Henry put the Ichabods up 42-41 with 6:29 left in the game.
The Griffons went up one and then the Ichabods Zack Riggins and Will McNeill had jumpers putting Washburn back up three with 2:35 to play. It would be the last points of regulation for the Ichabods as the Griffons hit a field goal with 2:08 to play and a free throw with three seconds left sending the game to overtime.
In the extra frame, Washburn jumped out to a 50-46 lead after a jumper by Chipman and then a pair of free throws by Kyle Wiggins. The Griffons cut the lead to two and then a pair of Chipman free throws put Washburn back up four at 52-48 with 2:49 to play in the game.
The Griffons went to the line with 2:21 to play, but only hit one free throw and then McNeill hit a jumper from the baseline to put the Ichabods up five with 1:48 to play. The Griffons went back to the line with 52 seconds to play and hit two cutting the Washburn advantage to two at 54-52. Washburn came up empty on its next possession and the Griffons 3-point attempt from the corner hit the side of the backboard and the Ichabods rebounded it and McNeill scored his 18th and 19th points of the game with three seconds left to seal the win.
The Ichabods were led by McNeill who finished with a game-high 19 points adding 11 rebounds for his eighth double double of his career while playing 42 of 45 minutes. Chipman had 10 points and six rebounds and Mitchell had 10 points.
After shooting just 7 of 26 from the field in the first half, the Ichabods finished at 37 percent for the game going 12 of 27 in the second half and 3 of 6 in the overtime period. The Griffons were 11 of 26 in the first half and then fell to 8 of 26 in the second half and finished the game just 1 of 5 in the extra frame.
The Griffons outrebounded the Ichabods 43 to 34. The teams also combined for only 24 free throw attempts in the game as Washburn finished 7 of 10 from the line while the Griffons were 8 of 14.

Series history with Northwest Missouri
• Saturday's meeting will be the 94th between the two schools and Washburn holds a 58-35 lead in the series. 
• Washburn has won eight of the last 12 including the last four of the last six in the series. 
• The Bearcats swept the regular season series during the 2011-12 season. 
• The series dates back to the 1940-41 season and they have played each other every year since WU joined the MIAA in 1989-90. 
• The Ichabods are 21-8 against the Bearcats in Lee Arena and have won five of the last six at home. 
• Since the 1956-57 season, Washburn is 20-19 in Maryville and since joining the MIAA during the 1990-91 season, the Ichabods are 11-9 on the road.

Last meeting with Northwest Missouri
(Feb. 9, 2013) TOPEKA, Kan. -- The No. 17-ranked Washburn Ichabods shot a smoking 63 percent in the second half en route to a 57 percent performance for the game as Washburn topped Northwest Missouri 80-67 on Schendel Court at Lee Arena on Saturday night. 
With the Ichabods (15-4, 8-4 MIAA) up one at 21-20 with 4:45 to play in the half, a Martin Mitchell 3-pointer started a 13-4 run to end the period sending the Ichabods to the locker room with a 34-22 lead over Northwest (15-7, 8-5 MIAA).
To start the second half, the Ichabods came out on a 13-2 run over the first 4:21 of play to open up a 47-24 lead for their biggest lead of the night at 23.
Washburn kept the Bearcats at arms-length until the Bearcats finished the game on a 9-0 run over the final 53 seconds to pull within 13 at the buzzer.
Mitchell led the Ichabods with 20 points on 8 of 11 shooting overall going 4 of 6 from 3-point range adding four rebounds and four assists.
Will McNeill had 16 points to go with four rebounds, three assists and two steals becoming the sixth Ichabod to score at least 1,000 points while dishing out 200 career assists. Christian Ulsaker and 11 points hitting all seven free throw attempts and Kyle Wiggins finished with 10 points.
Kyler Erickson had 17 points off the bench to lead the Bearcats. Grant Cozad had 13 off the bench and DeAngelo Hailey had 12.
Washburn finished at 57 percent from the field while limiting the Bearcats to 21 of 59 shooting for the game. The Bearcats did have a 34 to 28 advantage on the glass converting 19 offensive rebounds to 25 second chance points. The Northwest bench also outscored the Ichabod bench 48-21.

• The Bearcats are 15-8 overall and 8-6 in MIAA play.
• At home NWMSU is 9-2 while going 4-4 on the road.

Last time out for Northwest Missouri
Feb. 13, 2013 -- MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State men's basketball team were unable to overcome a cold shooting night in the first half as they fell 64-60 to Fort Hays State Wednesday night in MIAA action.
Looking to snap a two-game losing streak, the Bearcats fell to 15-8 on the season and 8-6 in the MIAA. Fort Hays State holds its top spot in the league at 15-6 overall and 10-4 in league play as the win clinched the Tigers a berth in next month's MIAA Tournament.
A feverish second half comeback saw the Bearcats erase what was a 16 point deficit at one time and a 35-21 Fort Hays State lead at the intermission.
After shooting a disappointing 30 percent from the field in the first half, Northwest turned the tables to shoot 48 percent in the second half. The Bearcats used a 13-4 run late in the second half to take their first lead of the night with 2:15 left in the game.
A deep three-pointer from Alex Sullivan put Northwest ahead 53-51, however the Tigers would answer on their next possession with a three-pointer of their own to regain the lead. Sullivan hit three, three-pointers and finished with nine points.
Both teams would trade baskets, when DeAngelo Hailey drove to the basket drawing a FHSU foul. Hailey hit one of two free-throws to tie the game at 56-56 with just 46 seconds left in the game.
Northwest was forced to foul as the Tigers finished a perfect 8-for-8 in the final minute from the free-throw line to seal the win. On the night FHSU missed just one free-throw going 13-of-14 from the line while the Bearcats shot 76 percent going 16-of-21.
Dillon Starzl returned to the court after missing last week due to injury leading the Bearcats with 16 points.
Fort Hays State was led Lance Russell, who scored a game-high 22 points. Teammate Craig Nicholson finished with 21 points as the duo combined for six of the Tigers' seven three-pointers.
The Bearcats will look to snap their three-game losing streak in a rematch of last Saturday's loss at Washburn. The Ichabods clinched a playoff berth with an overtime win at Missouri Western Wednesday night as Northwest now sits in sixth place.

Bod bits
Will McNeill was named a preseason All-American by the Basketball Times. He is the first Ichabod to receive preseason All-American honors since Travis Robbins prior to the 2004-05 season.
Will McNeill has been named the MIAA Player of the Week twice on Nov. 26 and on Dec. 3. 
• The Ichabods are +10.5 in scoring margin this season.
• The three freshman on the Ichabod roster (Khai Hutchinson, Evan Robinson and Colton Anderson) are all redshirting this season.
Bryce Simons has missed the entire season with a knee injury.
Alex North suffered a knee injury against Central Oklahoma and missed the last nine games and is likely heading for a medical redshirt as he's played in only five games this season after suffering a concussion against Bethany on Nov. 19.
• McNeill also became only the second Ichabod to score at least 1,500 points and 200 assists joining Tom Meier (2,082/242).
• With 30 more rebounds, McNeill would become the ninth Ichabod to have at least 1,000 points and 500 rebounds.

Ichabods in the national rankings
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods dropped from No. 17 to No. 25 in the latest NABC Top 25 coaches poll which was released today. The Ichabods return to action on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Missouri Western. The Ichabods were 1-1 last week falling to Missouri Western in Topeka while topping Northwest Missouri on Saturday. The Ichabods and the Bearcats will have a rematch as well on Saturday in Maryville. The Ichabods have been in the top 25 a total of 98 times since joining the NCAA ranks and they have been voted in the top 10 a total of 51 times since the 1989-90 season. The Ichabods are the only MIAA squad ranked in the top 25.

Home sweet home
• The Ichabods are 372-68 (.848) all-time in Lee Arena.
• The 2012-13 season marks the 28th season of play in Lee Arena.
• The Ichabods recorded a school-best 28-game winning streak from Nov. 19, 1993 to Feb. 8, 1995 in Lee Arena.
