Career high from Everett helps Lady Blues to ninth straight win

TOPEKA, Kan. – Stormye Everett shot 7 of 9 from the field with a career-high 18 points as No. 5 Washburn cruised to a 69-51 win Thursday night over Nebraska-Kearney at Schendel Court at Lee Arena.
 
The Lady Blues won their ninth straight game and improved to 20-3 overall and 14-1 in the MIAA. Washburn can clinch a bye in the first round of the MIAA tournament with a win Saturday at 5 p.m. against Fort Hays State in Lee Arena.
 
The Lady Blues, who recorded their 12th straight 20-win season, built a 17-point lead in the first half, led by 12 at halftime and scored 10 of the first 12 points in the second half to pull away quickly.
 
Everett missed her second shot of the night but made her final six attempts to surpass her previous career high of 15 points, set earlier this month against Missouri Western.
 
Lavonda McCall was 4 of 7 from the field with 10 points and Laura Kinderknecht provided seven assists to tie her career high. Sierra Moeller had nine points and a team-high nine rebounds.
 
Washburn shot 43 percent from the field and a season-high .842 (16 of 19) from the free throw line. The Lopers were just 27 percent from the field but made 18 of 20 free throws.
 
Washburn scored the first six points of the game and then used a 12-0 run soon after that to build a 22-5 lead. Everett had five straight points during the stretch.
 
The Lady Blues scored the first seven points of the second half  and after they got the lead to 20, the Lopers (6-16, 3-12 MIAA) never got within 16 points the rest of the way.
