TOPEKA, Kan. -- The fifth-ranked Lady Blues led by a point a halftime but were outscored by 14 in the second half in a 61-48 loss Wednesday at Emporia State.
Washburn (21-4, 15-2 MIAA) now must win Saturday at 5 p.m. against Central Missouri to win the MIAA title outright. The Jennies would share the MIAA title with Washburn with a win. The game in Lee Arena is Senior Day and the seven Washburn seniors will be honored after the game. The game will also be televised on the MIAA Television Network on numerous channels around the conference including Cox 22 in Kansas.
Lavonda McCall was Washburn's only double-figure scorer as she had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. It was her second double-double of the year. All of the points and eight of the rebounds came in the first half.
Laura Kinderknecht finished with seven points and five assists and she moved her career assist total to 301 to become the seventh Lady Blue player to record 300 or more assists in school history.
The Lady Hornets trailed 26-25 at halftime but scored 20 points in the first seven minutes to take a 13-point lead. They pushed it to 15 on a 3-pointer by Laura Patrick at the 9:36 mark and Washburn never recovered. Patrick hit six 3-pointers and ended with 20 points. Merissa Quick had a double-double with 20 rebounds and 11 points and in total, four Lady Hornets scored in double figures.
Emporia State gave Washburn a season-high 21-point deficit at the 5:41 mark. The Lady Blues ended the game after that on a 10-2 run but only got as close as 13 down when
Casyn Buchman hit a 3-pointer in the final seconds.
That 3 was only the second of the night for the Lady Blues as they went 2 of 13 from long range. Emporia State went 8 of 22 and also outrebounded Washburn by 10, 49-39.
Overall, Washburn shot 31 percent as a team while the Lady Hornets shot 36 percent.
Tiara George had a career-high six blocked shots while Quick equaled that total for ESU. George ended with nine points and six rebounds.
A layup from George with 5:43 to go in the first half gave Washburn a game-high seven-point lead at 24-17. The Lady Hornets ended the half on an 8-2 run to cut Washburn's lead to 26-25 at halftime.
