Ichabods end up on short end of pair of offensive games

TOPEKA, Kan. – The Ichabods scored 22 runs off 26 hits but were swept Thursday afternoon by Missouri Western in a doubleheader at Falley Field. The Griffons won the opener, 23-13 and took the second game, 15-9.
 
In all, 60 runs were scored and there were 67 hits between the two schools. Washburn fell to 3-9 overall and 3-9 in the MIAA while the Griffons moved their winning streak to 11 straight games and improved to 12-3 and 7-0 in the MIAA.

The Ichabods will stay home and host Emporia State Saturday at 12 p.m. in a doubleheader at Falley Field and then those two teams will wrap up their series Monday at 1 p.m. in Emporia.
 
Washburn gave up six runs in the first inning of the first game and nine runs in the first inning of the second game and was never able to regroup.
 
Washburn trailed 11-4 going into the bottom of the fourth of game one. The Ichabods then scored five runs in the fourth inning to get within two runs. A single from Brad Alberts scored two and a sacrifice fly from Dakota Kell drove in another.
 
Kell batted 4 for 8 in the doubleheader with a 1.250 slugging percentage and seven RBI as he had a single, double, triple and home run in the two games.
 
Taylor Herrington had Washburn's first homer of the year with a two-run shot in the bottom of the seventh but that only pulled Washburn within 10 and the momentum did not carry over as the Griffons started the second game with nine runs off nine hits in the top of the first inning.
 
The Griffons had six homers in the two games and hit .477 as a team. Washburn had a solid .356 average but had to use 13 pitchers in the two games.
 
The starters each took the loss as Dan Gabler went 1 2/3 innings in the first game and gave up eight runs, five earned. Ryne Dowling only recorded two outs as he started the second game and gave up all nine first inning runs.
