TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues softball team saw its first action in 18 days and split a doubleheader with Wayne State taking the opener 5-3 and the falling in the nightcap 13-5. Washburn will open MIAA play hosting Nebraska-Kearney on Friday at 2 p.m. at the Washburn Softball Complex.
In the opener, the Lady Blues (4-10) fell behind 3-0 after five-plus inning but scored in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by
Alex Zordel who scored
Shelby Erickson who reached on a fielder's choice. In the seventh inning, Zordel connected on her second home run of the season as her walk off home run on a 2-0 pitch was sent over the centerfield fence scoring both Erickson and
Lauren Thimmesch. Thimmesch, who also picked up the win in the circle improving to 3-5 on the season, doubled down the left field line.
Deidra Jones' sac fly to center scored
Amanda Kirkhart who walked earlier in the frame. Washburn scored four times in the bottom of the seventh for the come-from-behind win with two outs. Thimmesch improved to 3-5 on the season striking out four while allowing two earned runs scattering six hits.
In the nightcap, the Wildcats added a run in the first and five more in the second to take a 6-0 lead before Washburn added one in the bottom of the second on a home run by Thimmesch. Wayne State came back with one more in the third and the Lady Blues added two in the third inning cutting the lead to 7-3. Erickson drove in two with a single to left scoring Kirkhart and
Katie Schroeder. The Wildcats added a solo run in the fourth and five in the seventh inning to put the game away. Washburn score a pair of runs in the fifth inning, after Zordel singled to center scoring Kirkhart who doubled in the frame and Schroeder scored on a passed ball.
Marina Quimby took the pitching loss dropping to 1-5 on the season walking seven allowing 11 earned runs.
