Lady Blues softball team swept by Tigers

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues softball team was swept in MIAA play as they fell to Fort Hays State 7-2 and 14-1. Washburn returns to the field on Tuesday at Central Missouri in a conference doubleheader.

In the opener, Washburn jumped out to an early lead as Deidra Jones homered to left center staking the Lady Blues to the 1-0 lead with her third home run of the season. However the Tigers added two in the fourth and three more in the seventh to take a 7-1 lead. Washburn scored a solo run in the seventh on a home run by Alex Zordel. Lauren Thimmesch (4-6) allowed five earned runs striking out one. Shelby Erickson had the third hit for the Lady Blues as Tiger starter Maddie Holub improved to 10-0 striking out 13.

In the nightcap, Fort Hays State jumped out to a 9-0 lead after two innings before the Lady Blues added a solo run in the bottom of the second when Jones recorded a sac fly scoring Erickson who doubled to lead off the inning. The Tigers added two more in the third and three in the top of the fifth to take the 14-1 win recording 14 hits.
