MANHATTAN, Kan. -- The Ichabods were leading 1-0 in game one when they gave up an unearned run in top of the seventh to send their game with Nebraska-Kearney into extra innings. The Lopers scored in the eighth for a 2-1 win and then scored four late runs in the second game to win 8-2.
With wet conditions at Falley field, the games were played at Kansas State's Tointon Family Stadium. Washburn fell to 5-16 overall and 5-15 in the MIAA and is now scheduled to host Northeastern State Friday and Saturday in a three-game series at Falley Field.
Taylor Gentry answered his MIAA pitcher of the week honor by going the first seven innings in game one. He kept the Lopers scoreless until a two-out error allowed them to score an unearned run and tie the game. Nebraska-Kearney then scored another unearned run off reliever
Ty Geary and Washburn was retired in order in the eighth.
Gentry allowed just four hits with one walk and six strikeouts. He hasn't allowed an earned run in his last four outtings as he started his first game of the year and got a no decision. Geary was credited with the loss as he fell to 0-1.
Each team got just five hits in the first game. The Ichabods got three of them in the fourth inning as they manufactured their only run.
Riley Price led off with a single and moved to second on a hit from
Brad Alberts. A sacrifice bunt from
Dakota Kell moved him to third and then he scored on a hit from
Connor Crimmins.
The Lopers were hit by six Washburn pitches but ended up leaving 13 runners on base.
Washburn took a 2-0 lead in the second game with two runs in the first but the Lopers (14-11, 14-9 MIAA) scored eight unanswered runs to earn the sweep.
Parker Gibson and
Taylor Herrington started the first inning with hits then later scored on an error that cost the Lopers four bases.
The Ichabods got 10 hits in the second game and kept UNK to eight but they left 10 runners on base.
AJ Green started for Washburn and took the loss as the first six Loper runs were credited to him. He gave up just four hits but walked five as he fell to 0-3.
