Northeastern State comes from behind twice to sweep Ichabods

EMPORIA, Kan. -- The Ichabods led by identical 2-1 scores twice Friday in Emporia but Northeastern State came back both times to sweep Washburn in a doubleheader at Glennen Field. The RiverHawks took the opener 6-3 and the second game 6-4.

Washburn fell to 5-18 overall and 5-17 in the MIAA. The two will wrap up the series with a single game Saturday at noon at the Bettis Sports Complex at Lake Shawnee in Topeka. This will be the Ichabods' eighth straight game away from a home field as a wet outfield will once again keep them off Falley Field.

Riley Price hit his first home run of the year with a two-run shot to left field in the first inning of game one to put Washburn up 2-1. Parker Gibson doubled to score on the hit.

The RiverHawks then scored one in the second and three in the third to go up 5-2.Washburn got one back in the fifth when Taylor Herrington doubled then scored on a single from Gibson.

Brad Alberts pitched the first five innings for Washburn and gave up five runs on seven hits. He walked two with seven strikeouts as he fell to 0-4 on the year.

Each team was scoreless the first four innings of the second game. Northeastern State got a run in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly then Washburn scored twice to take the lead. John Stoothoff got his first hit in his first game at Washburn and he and Tyler Bailey later scored on a single from Gibson.

The RiverHawks then had a five-run seventh inning as Washburn reliever Ty Geary gave up a three-run home run. The first two runs were charged to starter Drew Ridley as he suffered the loss. He gave up three runs off five hits and fell to 1-3.

Washburn loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the seventh but scored just two runs. Corey Gragg's leadoff single was Washburn's only hit that inning as two Ichabods reached on walks and one on an error.

Greg Mason pitched the final 2 2/3 innings for Washburn and kept NSU scoreless. He allowed two hits and a strikout.

Washburn was out-hit 19-10 in the games and had four errors while NSU had one. Gibson ended with three hits and three RBI.
