TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues split an MIAA doubleheader with Lincoln winning the first game 6-4 before falling 6-2 in the second game. Washburn will be back in action on April 3 when they travel to Rockhurst and then come back to MIAA play with Missouri Southern on April 5 and Pittsburg State on April 6 in Topeka.
In the opener, the Lady Blues jumped out to a 1-0 lead after their first at bat when
Shelby Erickson singled to left scoring
Katie Schroeder who walked to lead off the game and then stole second base. The Blue Tigers tied the score with a home run down the right field line by Erin Sommerer in the top of the second inning. Washburn stretched its lead to 4-1 after scoring three in the bottom of the second inning.
Kristen Bell hit her second home run of the season to center. Schroeder singled to center and
Amanda Kirkhart reached on an error.
Alex Zordel singled to left scoring Schroeder and then Erickson singled to right sending Kirkhart home as Washburn had four hits in the inning. After neither team scored in the third inning, the Blue Tigers scored a solo run in the fourth on an RBI single by Kelsey Hight. Washburn scored a run of its own in the bottom of the frame when Erickson picked up her third RBI of the game with a sac fly scoring Schroeder. Washburn added another run in the fifth to go up 6-2 after
Marina Quimby singled to left sending
Deidra Jones home after leading off the inning with a walk and then stole second moving to third on a throwing error by the catcher. The Blue Tigers would add two in the top of the seventh but it was not enough as the Lady Blues snapped their three-game losing streak.
Lauren Thimmesch picked up the win striking out three scattering four hits allowing the four earned runs. Erickson finished 2 for 3 with 3 RBI and Schroeder scored three runs while picking up two hits.
In the second game, the Blue Tigers broke open a scoreless game in the top of the sixth with back to back home runs by Brianna Akers and Kristina Hein. Lincoln added another run going up 3-0.
The Blue Tigers added three insurance runs in the seventh to go up 6-0. Washburn got on the board in the bottom of the seventh with a two-run homer by
Leah Garland scoring Jones who singled to lead off the inning but it would not be enough as the Blue Tigers took the 6-2 win.
Marina Quimby took the loss in the circle. Jones had three hits for Washburn who finished with seven in the game compared to 12 for the Blue Tigers.
