Lady Blues snap string in sweep at Southwest Baptist

BOLIVAR, Mo. -- The Washburn Lady Blues made their final roadtrip of the season a good one as they snapped an 11-game losing streak at Southwest Baptist on Thursday. Washburn will return home to wrap up the season with twinbills against Truman on Friday and Lindenwood on Saturday at the Washburn Softball Complex.

In the opener, Washburn scored two runs in the top of the second inning when the Lady Blues took advantage of a Bearcat error when Marina Quimby recorded her first collegiate home run driving in Haylee Marsteller. Neither team would score until the bottom of the fourth when the Bearcats scored two runs to tie the score. The Lady Blues scored a run in the fifth to take the lead for good when Lauren Byrn's double scored Skyler Gentry putting Washburn up 3-2. The Lady Blues would add three more in the sixth to take the 6-2 win. Lauren Thimmesch connected on her team-high 11th home runs of the season to lead off the inning. Quimby drove in her third run of the game scoring Shelby Erickson who singled in the inning. An RBI ground out by Gentry scored Marsteller who walked. Thimmesch picked up the complete-game win striking out four and scattering five hits improving to 8-14 in the circle.

In the second game, Alex Zordel made her first career start as a Lady Blue pitcher and only her second pitching appearance in four years at Washburn and picked up the win allowing one earned run allowing three Bearcat hits while striking out two. Washburn scored three runs in the top of the first capped by a 2 RBI single by Marsteller. Leah Garland was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score a game as well. The Lady Blues added another unearned run in the second inning to take a 4-0 lead. Zordel held the Bearcats without a hit until a lead off triple in the sixth inning. SBU would score twice in the sixth inning and then Zordel retired the last six batters in the game to pick up her first win pitching at Washburn. Katie Schroeder had three hits to lead Washburn and Zordel added two hits and a run scored.
