Ichabods take control in second half to beat Pittsburg State

TOPEKA, Kan. – The Ichabods trailed most of the first half but took control right before halftime and led the entire second half in a 70-60 win over Pittsburg State Saturday night at Schendel Court in Lee Arena.
 
Washburn won its third straight game and improved to 10-5 overall and 5-3 in the MIAA. The Ichabods will stay at home to play Central Oklahoma Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
 
Casyn Buchman had her second double-double this year with 11 points and 10 rebounds. She was just 3 of 11 from the field but made 5 of 6 free throws. All 10 of her rebounds came in the second half as Washburn out-rebounded the Gorillas 24-14.
 
Brittney Lynch also reached double figures in rebounding with 10 and she added eight points. Kara Lee was 6 of 10 from the field and Honor Duvall was 5 of 11 for 15 points to lead all scorers.
 
Washburn ended the first half on a 12-0 run to take a 29-23 lead into halftime. The Gorillas wear leading by six at 23-17 with 4:19 remaining but didn't score again that half.
 
The Gorillas ended their drought with the first points of the second half to pull within four but they didn't get any closer than that. Free throws from Haley Pfau gave Washburn a 10-point lead at the 10:53 mark but a 5-0 PSU run later got the Gorillas within eight points.
 
A 6-0 run that ended with two minutes remaining all but put the game away as Washburn took a 63-50 lead. Free throws from Buchman at 1:31 then gave Washburn a game-high 14-point lead.
 
Washburn shot 50 percent in the second half and 42 percent in the game. The Ichabods were 70 percent from the free throw line and won the game without the help of a 3-pointer. They were 0 of 6 from long range and only took two attempts in the second half.

Pittsburg State led the first six minutes of the game before Washburn went up by one on a lay-up from Duvall. That lead lasted just over four minutes before the Gorillas went back up and held the advantage until Washburn's 12-0 run ended the half.
 
Pittsburg State shot 37 percent from the field in the game and made 10 of 22 3-pointers. The Gorillas were just 4 of 13 (31 percent) from the free throw line. Washburn won the rebound battle, 42-38 and had eight turnovers while PSU had 11.
 
Two of the league's top three scorers were held well below their average. Lizzy Jeronimus, second in the MIAA with 19.6 points a game entering Saturday, was held to just eight points as she was 4 of 17 from the field. Buchman was third in scoring with 18.8 and was held to 11 points.
 
Alexa Bordewick led the Gorillas with 21 points as she hit 6 of 9 3-pointers. Cathy Brugman came off the bench for 16 points.
