Ichabods fall in Wichita to Newman by 11

WICHITA, Kan. -- A hot-shooting Newman Jets team was too much to overcome as the Ichabods dropped to 2-3 on the season in a 90-79 loss on the road in Wichita. The Ichabods will be back in action on Monday in Hawaii when they will face Hawaii-Hilo starting four games in five days in Hawaii.

The Ichabods trailed 40-36 at the break after jumping out to a 23-14 lead after a bucket by Korey Fisher, who scored 13 in the first half. The Jets switched to a 2-3 zone and then Newman came back with a 16-2 run of its own going up 30-25 before Washburn came back with a 7-0 to take back the lead at 32-20 with 5:52 to play in the frame. The Jets used another run, this time a 10-0 burst taking a 40-32 lead before the Ichabods came back with four points cutting the margin to four at the half.

Washburn was 13 of 34 in the first half going 2 of 14 from 3-point range.

In the second half the Jets pushed their lead to eight with 11:34 to play going back in front after Washburn cut the lead to one at 50-49.

Newman went up by nine at 61-52 with 11:02 to play, but a foul on the Jets put the Ichabods in the bonus with 10:28 to play in the game.

The Jets pushed their lead up to 13 after a 13-6 run over a four-minute stretch hitting three 3-pointers while holding the Ichabods to 2 of 6 from the field while Washburn committed four turnovers during the run.

A 7-0 run by the Ichabods trimmed the lead back to six at 68-62 with 6:30 to go but again the Jets pushed it back to nine and then to 11 after a pair of free throws in 5:26 remaining.

A traditional 3-point play by Kyle Wiggins cut the Jets lead back to six at 73-67 with 4:51 to play and after forcing a shot clock violation, a lay up by Algie Key after a miss cut it to four at 73-69 with 3:59.

The teams traded lay ups with 3:19 to go and the Jets held a 75-71 lead before being whistled for a foul sending the Jets to the line. Newman hit them both and the Ichabods had a turnover on their next possession and then scored to go up 79-71 and the Ichabods would not get closer the rest of the way as the Jets held on for the 11-point win.

Fisher led the Ichabods with 14 points with all but one coming in the first half. He was the only Ichabod to reach double figures. Christen Ulsaker and Alex North each had six rebounds.

Reggie Baker scored 30 points to lead the Jets and Jeremy Espinoza scored 21. Overall the Jets were 10 of 27 from 3-point range in the game.
