LAIE, Hawaii -- The Washburn Ichabods cut the BYU-Hawaii lead from 12 to one midway through the second half but couldn't get any closer as they fell 90-80 to the Seasiders. Washburn will open MIAA play on Thursday against Southwest Baptist in Lee Arena.
Washburn (3-5) trailed 40-28 at the break but trimmed the lead to one at 51-50 with 12:29 to play in the game on a tip in bucket by
Algie Key but the Seasiders hit a 3-pointer on their next trip down the court to go back up four. The Ichabods cut the lead back to four with 3:35 to play with a 3-pointer by
Korey Fisher but Washburn would not get any closer than six the rest of the way.
Key led the Ichabods with 22 points in 25 minutes adding five assists and two steals while
Kyle Wiggins and Fisher each had 13.
David Salach scored a season-high 12 hitting a pair of 3-pointers. The Ichabods were outrebounded 42 to 27 recording only five offensive rebounds.
BYU-Hawaii (4-0) hit 13 of 26 3-pointers in the game compared to 7 of 15 for Washburn. Pablo Coro had 23 to lead the Seasiders and Scott Friel had 17 points and 13 rebounds.
Washburn shot 51 percent in the game including 19 of 33 for a 58 percent average in the second half and finished 17 of 25 from the free throw line while BYU-Hawaii was 21 of 22 in the game.
