TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn Ichabods split a non-conference doubleheader with Ottawa falling in the first game 13-7 and then coming back to win the second game 8-6. Washburn was to play in the MSSU Invitational this weekend, but it has been canceled due to the forecast for weekend weather in Joplin.
Game 1 – Ottawa 13, Washburn 7
The Braves scored all 13 of their runs in the last four innings en route to the 13-7 win. Washburn took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a solo home run by
Deidra Jones. After the Braves took a 2-1 lead, the Ichabods came back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-2 lead on a three-run homer by
Bre Hixon. However in the fifth inning, Ottawa scored five more taking advantage of two Washburn errors jumping out to a 7-4 lead. The Braves added three more unearned runs lifting their lead to 10-4. The Ichabods added two in the sixth on an RBI single by
Alex Sweeney and a sac fly by
Katie Schroeder. The Braves scored three more in the top of the seventh. Washburn added one in the seventh on an RBI by Jones. Thimmesch took the loss in the circle allowing eight earned runs throwing 155 pitches. Hixon had 3 RBI and Jones drove in two runs.
Game 2 – Washburn 8, Ottawa 6
The Ichabods took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Thimmesch hit the first of her two home runs in the night cap scoring
Katie Schroeder who led off the game with a walk. Neither team would score until the Braves scored three in the top of the fifth inning on a home run by Mikayla Oliphant. Washburn responded with four in the bottom of the fourth to take back the lead 6-3.
Samantha Carson drove in Schroeder and then
Jordan Erickson doubled to right scoring both
Marina Quimby who singled and
Deidra Jones who walked. The Ichabods also scored a run on a wild pitch in the frame. Ottawa cut the lead to 6-5 in the top of the sixth on a home run by Mary Constant but again Washburn came back with two in the sixth on another two-run homer by Thimmesch putting Washburn up 8-5. The Braves added a solo run in the top of the seventh but would get no closer.
Kaylee Erickson picked picked up the win in her first collegiate appearance allowing nine hits and six earned runs. THimmesch had four RBI and Quimby finished with three hits.
Quimby finished with five hits in the two games scoring a pair of runs and
Jordan Erickson had four hits in the doubleheader. Thimmesch led the Ichabods with three runs scored and four RBI.
