Gorillas make late first-half run and hold on to beat Ichabods

PITTSBURG, Kan. – Washburn led much of the first half but suffered an 8-0 Pittsburg State run late in the period to give up the lead. The Ichabods never recovered as they fell 62-49 Saturday afternoon in the season finale.
 
Washburn fell to 16-10 and 11-8 in the MIAA. The Ichabods will be the No. 6 seed in the MIAA postseason tournament and host the No. 11 seed Monday at 7 p.m. at Schendel Court in Lee Arena. The opponent will be determined by a tie-breaker and be released by the MIAA office later Saturday as the full bracket is finished. The winner of Monday's first round game will play third-seeded Pittsburg State Thursday at 8:15 p.m. in Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo.
 
Casyn Buchman was Washburn's only double-figure scorer with 13 points. Brittney Lynch added eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds. She also led the team with three assists.
 
The Ichabods led by as much as six through the first 10 minutes of the game and were up 22-18 on a jumper by Lynch at the 8:02 mark. The 23rd-ranked Gorillas (23-6, 16-3 MIAA) then went on an 8-0 run to take a 26-22 lead and they went into the locker room up 32-38.
 
Kara Lee got Washburn within two points as she opened the second half with a basket but the Ichabods didn't get any closer. Pitt State went up by 10 at the 11:08 mark. Washburn closed the gap with a 7-0 run after that but the Gorillas took control down the stretch and had a game-high 15-point lead with 2:23 remaining.
 
Washburn shot 31 percent in the game while the Gorillas shot 37 percent. Washburn won the rebound battle 42-35 but had 12 turnovers while the Gorillas had eight.
 
Lizzy Jeronimus led the Gorillas with 20 points off a 5 of 9 performance from the field and 10 of 10 effort from the free throw line. She tied for the team lead with seven rebounds.
