TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabod softball team crushed three grand slams and a two-run homer against Northern State leading to a sweep over the Wolves winning game one 9-7 before taking game two 15-5 in five innings. Washburn (13-5) will be at the MWSU Regional Crossover this weekend in St. Joseph, Mo., playing five games.
In game two,
Katie Schroeder tied a school record with 7 RBI after hitting a grand slam and a bases loaded triple in the game.
Game 1 - WU 9, NSU 7
Washburn took advantage of four Wolves errors and two in the bottom of the sixth as Washburn rallied for the 9-7 win. Washburn was trailing 7-6 before
Bre Hixon reached on an error and she moved to second on a double by
Katie Schroeder. Hixon scored on a sac fly by
Samantha Carson.
Lauren Thimmesch then singled to left and moved to second on the throw home trying to catch Schroeder at home but the throw got past the catcher allowing Thimmesch to move to third.
Deidra Jones then scored Thimmesch with a sac fly putting Washburn up 9-7. Washburn was down 2-0 after the the Wolves' at bat in the second inning but scored one in the bottom of the frame when Washburn scored on an error by the NSU shortstop. A grand slam by Jones in the third inning put the Ichabods up 5-2.After NSU scored one in the fourth, Washburn added one of its own in the bottom of the inning on a throwing error by NSU putting Washburn up 6-3. NSU added two in the fifth and two more in the sixth taking the 7-6 lead setting up Washburn's come back win in the bottom of the sixth. Jones finished with 5 RBI to lead the Ichabods with one hit and Schroeder, Carson and Thimmesch each had two hits. Schroeder's two hits were a triple and a double.Thimmesch improved to 6-1 in the circle pitching 5 1/3 innings in relief.
Game 2 - WU 15, NSU 5 (5 innings)
In the second game
Katie Schroeder tied a school record with seven RBI in the game with a grand slam and a bases-loaded triple leading the Ichabods to the win. Washburn broke the game open by sending 13 batters to the plate in the second inning scoring 10 runs taking back a Wolves 2-0 lead. Washburn's Schroeder and
Jordan Erickson each had grand slams in the inning. Washburn scored five unearned runs in the inning. After NSU scored two in the third and one more in the fourth, Washburn came back with five in the bottom of the fourth highlighted by Schroeder's bases loaded triple and a two-run homer by starting pitcher Carson. Carson improved to 5-1 in the circle.Â
