Ichabods drop a pair in day one of MWSU Regional Crossover

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Washburn Ichabod softball team went 0-2 on the first day of the Missouri Western State University Regional Crossover falling to Minnesota State 8-2 in the opening game before giving up a late-inning comeback by Northern State in a 9-6 loss in the second game. Washburn will take on Concordia St. Paul and Wayne State on Saturday before wrapping up the crossover on Sunday against No. 5 Augustana on Sunday.

Game 1 – Minnesota State 8, Washburn 2
Washburn fell behind early and could not recover while falling 8-2 to the Mavericks. Washburn was down 4-2 before scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Shelby Erickson hit a home run and then Haylee Marsteller had an RBI double scoring Marina Quimby who walked earlier in the inning. Marsteller had two hits in the game to pace Washburn. Kaylee Erickson allowed seven earned runs in the loss.
 
Game 2 – Northern State 9, Washburn 6
Playing for the third time in three days after the Ichabods swept a doubleheader from the Wolves in Topeka on Tuesday, Washburn gave up an eight-spot in the bottom of the sixth inning falling 9-6. Washburn jumped out early to a 3-0 lead in their first at bat when Deidra Jones doubled scoring Katie Schroeder who walked to lead off the game and then stole second. Shelby Erickson reached on a fielder's choice driving in Lauren Thimmesch and then Marina Quimby scored Jones after reaching on another fielder's choice. In the top of the third, Jones connected on her eighth home of the season stretching Washburn's lead to 4-0. After the Wolves added a solo run in the bottom of the third, Washburn came back with two more in the sixth on a 2 RBI single by Katie Schroeder scoring Jordan Erickson and Quimby who both singled. In the bottom of the sixth the wheels came off as the Wolves scored eight times with four coming as unearned runs to rally for the win. Jones led Washburn with three hits while driving in two. Schroeder finished with two RBI too.
