TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabod softball team split an MIAA doubleheader falling 7-3 before rallying for a 7-6 comeback in the nightcap with Central Missouri. Washburn returns to action at Pittsburg State on Saturday.
Game 1 - UCM 7, WU 3
In the opener, the Jennies scored two jumping out to the early lead but the Ichabods came back with two of their own in the bottom of the first on back to back RBI singles by
Shelby Erickson and
Marina Quimby. Central Missouri came back with three in the top of third. Washburn got one run back in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by
Katie Schroeder scoring
Jordan Erickson who doubled. The Jennies added solo runs in the sixth and seventh leading to the 7-3 win. Washburn stranded 11 base runners in the game and out hit the Jennies 9 to 8.
Lauren Thimmesch and
Jordan Erickson each had two hits to lead Washburn.
Kaylee Erickson (2-5) took the loss in the circle. Thimmesch pitched 4 2/3 innings in relief allowing two earned runs.
Game 2 - WU 7, UCM 6
Lauren Thimmesch's 13th home run of the season in the bottom of the sixth gave the Ichabods a 7-6 lead and turned out to be the game-winning RBI in a 7-6 win leading to the split. The home run was also the Ichabods' 51st of the season breaking Washburn's previous team high of 50 set during the 2002 season. After the Jennies took a 1-0 lead after their first at bat, Washburn tied the score at 1-1 on back to back doubles by
Marina Quimby and
Haylee Marsteller. The Jennies broke the deadlock with three runs in the top of the third, but Washburn sent 10 batters to the plate in the bottom of third on RBI singles by Quimby, Marsteller,
Bre Hixon and a bases loaded walk by
Katie Schroeder. The Jennies scored twice in the fifth. Washburn tied the score on a sac fly by Hixon scoring Quimby who led off the inning with a single and moved to third on Marsteller's double. Quimby and Marsteller finished with three hits each and Thimmesch recorded two while scoring two times. Quimby scored three times in the game.
Samantha Carson through 142 pitches improving to 7-2 in the circle with six strikeouts. Washburn out hit the Jennies 13 to 7 while stranding eight.
Marsteller finished 4 for 7 with two doubles and Thimmesch and Quimby were each 4 for 8 with Quimby scoring three times in the doubleheader.
