Washburn softball team splits wild doubleheader at Missouri Southern

JOPILN, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabod softball team split an MIAA doubleheader at Missouri Southern on Sunday winning 16-13 in nine innings in the opener before the Lions rallied for a 7-6 win in the nightcap. Washburn (18-17, 10-8 MIAA) will be back in action on Wednesday when they will host Rockhurst at 2 p.m. at the Washburn Softball Complex in non-conference action.

Game 1 - WU 16, MSSU 13 (9 innings)
Shelby Erickson hit a 3-run home run giving the Ichabods a 16-13 lead and Marina Quimby tied a school record with five hits while driving in four in the three-hour opener. Washburn took an early 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Quimby scoring Katie Schroeder who led off the game and was hit by a pitch. The Lions came back with three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 lead chasing starter Kaylee Erickson. Washburn regained the lead with a six-run second inning capped by a grand slam by Samantha Carson. Haylee Marsteller drove in two with a double to left scoring Quimby and Lauren Thimeesch. The Ichabods tacked on four more in the third inning on RBI doubles by Thimmesch and Deidra Jones and an RBI single by Quimby. The Lions came back with three of their own runs in the bottom of the third cutting the lead to 11-6. The Lions added four in the fourth and a solo run in the fifth tying the score at 11. Washburn broke the tie in the sixth with a home run by Quimby putting the Ichabods back up 12-11. Washburn went up 13-11 with an RBI single by Quimby before the Lions tied the score with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh. Neither team scored in the eighth inning and Shelby Erickson hit a three-run homer in the top of the ninth. The Lions left two on the bottom of the frame and Carson struck out the Lions' last batter for the opening win. Quimby became only the second Ichabod to record five hits in a game joining Julie Blaufuss from 2001 and Carson and Shelby Erickson each had six at bats tying a school record for the 22nd and 23rd times in the program history. Jordan Erickson had three hits and Schroeder and Quimby each scored three runs. Carson (8-2) picked up the win pitching 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief allowing one hit and striking out two. The teams combined for 29 runs and 32 hits in the opener.

Game 2 - MSSU 7, WU 6 
Katie Schroeder broke a scoreless game in the top of the fourth with a 2 RBI triple to left center scoring Jordan Erickson and Bri Hixon putting the Ichabods up 2-0. Washburn added three more in the top of the fifth stretching the the lead to 5-0. After Deidra Jones led off the inning with a single and Marina Quimby singled as well, Haylee Marsteller drew a walk and Shelby Erickson singled driving in two runs and then Jordan Erickson reached on a fielder's choice scoring another. The Lions got on the board in the bottom of the fifth scoring two runs trimming the Ichabod lead to 5-2 after five innings. In the top of the seventh, Schroeder hit her second triple of the game scoring Jordan Erickson who reached on a fielder's choice giving the Ichabods a 6-2 lead. However the Lions scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh for the win. Schroeder, Jordan Erickson and Shelby Erickson had two hits to lead Washburn and Schroeder had three RBI. Lauren Thimmesch (7-6) took the loss relieving Carson who pitched six innings allowing five earned runs.

Quimby finished 6 for 8 in the doubleheader with 4 RBI while scoring four runs. Jordan Erickson was 5 for 9 with four runs scored and Shelby Erickson drove in five runs going 4 for 10 with a home run.
