SKILLMAN, N.J. -- Washburn's
Bobby Florence has been named the 2014 National NCAA Division II ITA/Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sportsmanship & Leadership Award winner which was announced by the ITA on Wednesday. Florence will now be recognized at the US Open with the other divisional winners. He was announced as a regional winner last week.
Florence finished his Washburn career with 57 singles wins and 51 doubles wins in four seasons at Washburn and was received the MIAA's Sportsmanship Award as voted on by the league's coaches.
The ITA/Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award recognizes outstanding individuals in all divisions at the regional and national level. In August the national winners are honored during a special ceremony hosted by the USTA during Arthur Ashe Kids' Day inside Ashe Stadium. This award which dates back to 1982, goes to NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and JUCO men's and women's players who have exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements. From the ITA Release:
The 2014 ITA/Arthur Ashe Jr. Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship winner, has been a standout on and off the court for Washburn University. He is universally respected by his peers and is quietly determined to succeed in everything he does. He has received various Washburn business scholarships, academic scholarships and was a member of the Presidents honor roll. Florence is also a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee that organizes and plans events for student athletes, many of which help people in need. He's been involved in the Big Brother Big Sisters Tennis Camp and a volunteer for diaper drive to benefit mothers in need for the Rescue Mission.
