13th-ranked Bods start four-game road trip Saturday at Northwest Missouri

The 13th-ranked Ichabods (11-3, 3-3 MIAA) begin a four-game road trip Saturday at 1:30 at Northwest Missouri. The Bearcats are 4-11 overall and 0-6 in the MIAA.
The Bods fell 64-61 Monday against Central Missouri. WU led 61-58 with 2:21 to play after a 9-0 run but gave up the final six points in the loss. NWMSU lost 71-54 Thursday to Nebraska-Kearney.
WU led at some point with under 5:00 remaining in all three losses. The Bods led until the 3:21 mark against MSSU, the 2:43 mark against LWU and until 53 seconds were remaining against UCM.
Washburn is 50-10 in the all-time series against Northwest Missouri. The Ichabods are 17-6 on the road and haven't lost there since 2010-11. WU won 73-55 last year in Topeka.
The Bods were third in the nation in the last NCAA report with a +14.5 rebounding margin, fourth holding opponents to .335 shooting and sixth holding opponents to 54.8 points a game.
The Bods have kept opponents to under 40% shooting 10 times and under 30% five times.
The Ichabods fell from eighth to 13th in the first poll of the new year after going 3-2. Washburn is one of three MIAA teams ranked including No. 1 Emporia State and No. 5 Pittsburg State.
Taylor Ignoto has reached double figures in 12 of her 13 games. She's first on the team with 15.7 points a game and she shoots 49 percent from the field. She's 8th in the MIAA in scoring.
Casyn Buchman was 17th in the nation and first in the MIAA shooting .905 from the free throw line.  She's 18 of 18 in the MIAA games.
Ron McHenry is in his 15th season as coach. He has gone 369-85 since 2000 and has won eight MIAA titles with 12 NCAA tournament appearances. He coached the team to the 2004-05 national championship.


13th-ranked Bods start four-game road trip Saturday at Northwest Missouri
The No. 13 Ichabods will travel to Northwest Missouri Saturday for a 1:30 p.m. game at Bearcat Arena. The MIAA matchup starts a four-game road trip as Washburn (11-3, 3-3 MIAA) will look to get above .500 in the conference again and avoid giving the Bearcats (4-11, 0-6) their first MIAA win this year.

The Ichabods lost their second game in the last four Monday, 64-61. Washburn led by three at the 2:00 mark then gave up the final six points over the last 1:23 of the game. Honor Duvall shot 8 of 13 from the field for 19 points. She is shooting .596 from the field and she entered the week 11th in the country and second in the MIAA in shooting percentage.

Northwest Missouri is 4-11 overall and 0-6 in the MIAA after a 71-54 loss Thursday to Nebraska-Kearney. The Bearcats trailed by three at halftime but were outscored 43-29 in the second half.

The Ichabods have one of the toughest defenses in the MIAA and country. They have kept opponents to under 50 points seven times and their win against St. Mary marked the fifth time they kept opponents to under 30 percent shooting. They are sixth in the nation in scoring defense and fourth in field goal percent defense.

Taylor Ignoto has scored in double figures in 12 of her 13 games. She was eighth in the MIAA in scoring in the latest report. Casyn Buchman leads the MIAA shooting .905 from the free throw line. She's 18 of 18 from the line in MIAA games.

The Ichabods lead the series against Northwest Missouri 50-10 and have won six straight against the Bearcats.

Ichabods near the top in several national and MIAA defensive categories
The Ichabods were near the top in several MIAA and NCAA defensive categories in this week's statistics reports. They were third in the nation and second in the MIAA with a +14.5 rebounding margin and fourth overall and second in the conference holding opponents to just .335 shooting from the field. The 54.8 points a game they were allowing was sixth overall and second in the MIAA.

Honor Duvall was 11th in the country and second in the conference shooting .593 from the field. Casyn Buchman led the MIAA and was 17th in the country shooting .905 from the free throw line.

Strong defense key to Bod victories
Just four opponents have shot above 40 percent against the Ichabods this year including all three teams that beat Washburn this year.

The Bods are 10-0 when keeping their opponents to under 40 percent shooting and their 1-3 when their opponent shoots above 40 percent.

Washburn is holding opponents to .316 shooting in games won and .453 shooting in the three losses. The Bods have kept five of their opponents to under 30 percent shooting. Benedictine shot a season-low .170 against Washburn while Missouri Southern has the season high against Washburn at .465 in the Lions December 6 win.

Don't forget - Season highlights
Washburn was picked third in the MIAA preseason coaches poll. The Bods earned three first-place votes. Emporia State was picked first and Pittsburg State was second.
Washburn's 93-35 win Nov. 16 against PR-Rio Piedras was the school's second largest against an NCAA school. The 62 rebounds was the largest against an NCAA school.
WU outscored Benedictine 48-4 in the paint on Nov. 18.
The Ichabods trailed nearly the entire second half Nov. 22 against Drury but Casyn Buchman's free throw in the final seconds sent the game to overtime. She then scored 10 points in the overtime to help WU knock off then-No. 3 Drury, 87-79. She had a career-high 28 points.
Washburn was unranked in the USA Today Sports preseason poll but earned a No. 18 ranking in the first regular season poll of the year.
Taylor Ignoto averaged 20.5 points and shot 72 percent Nov. 25-29 to earn MIAA player of the week.
The seven juniors on the 2013-14 team had 81 percent of Washburn's scoring and 79 percent of the individual rebounding. Six of those seven juniors are back this year as seniors. A junior led the team in scoring every game last year and in rebounding in all but two games.

Up next for Washburn
Washburn will be off during the midweek next week and then return to action January 17 at Pittsburg State at 1:30 p.m. The Bods lost on the road at Pitt State last year to end a seven-game winning streak against the Gorillas.
