Ichabods back in action on Saturday hosting Rockhurst

  Opening Tip
•     The Washburn Ichabods will continue their four-game homestand with Rockhurst on Saturday starting at 3 p.m. on Schendel Court at Lee Arena.
•    The Ichabods are coming off an 89-66 win over Tabor on Nov. 16.
•    The Hawks are coming off a 77-71 loss to Central Missouri on Nov. 17 in Warrensburg.
•    Washburn improved to 31-1 in season openers in Lee Arena.
•    Against Tabor the Ichabods tied a school record with 64 rebounds.
•    The Ichabods have won their last 32-straight non-conference, regular season home games dating back to a Nov. 29, 2005 home loss to Central Oklahoma in an 83-67 defeat prior to the Bronchos joining the MIAA.
•    Ichabod coach Bob Chipman is 13-3 all-time against Rockhurst.

Rockhurst head basketball coach Drew Diener . . .
•   is in his first season on the Rockhurst bench and has gone 1-1.
•     he was coach for six seasons at Cardinal Stritch University where he was 168-43.
•    qualified for the national tournament in each of Diener's six seasons. The Wolves won the NAIA Division II national championship in 2013, and advanced to the Elite Eight in 2012 and the Sweet 16 in 2014 and 2015.   


  Last Time Out For The Ichabods
Washburn 89, Tabor 66 -- Nov. 16, 2015
TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods improved to 31-1 all-time in home openers in Lee Arena while tying a school record with 64 rebounds in an 89-68 win over Tabor on Monday night. 
The Ichabods led from start to finish in the game jumping out to 1 21-11 lead with 12:29 to go before the Bluejays (6-0) came back to tie the score at 23 with 9:42 remaining in the first half. The Ichabods built the lead back to 10 at 44-34 before the half and would go on to take a 48-39 lead into the halftime break after shooting 52 percent from the field hitting 17 of 33 shots while holding Tabor to 13 of 42 attempts for a 31 percent average.
In the second half, a 25-9 over a 12:38 stretch pushed the lead to 73-51 as the Ichabods pushed out to a lead of 26 with four minutes to play leading to the 21-point win.
Washburn was led in a balanced scoring attack by Jeremy Lickteig and Randall Smith each recorded 13 points while Tyas Martin had 11. Cameron Wiggins and Andy Wilson each had 10. Wiggins added seven rebounds, five steals and four assists as well. David Salach led the ichabods with eight rebounds scoring eight points off the bench adding three assists.
Malik Brooks scored 15 to lead the Bluejays in a game which counted as an exhibition game for Tabor.
The Ichabods had 29 of their 64 rebounds in the first half holding the Bluejays to 36 in the game. The last time an Ichabod team had 64 rebounds was against Missouri-Kansas City on Feb. 2, 1976 in a 69-65 win over the Kangaroos. Washburn also had 24 offensive rebounds leading to 26 second chance points  

 About Rockhurst
• Rockhurst enters the game at 1-1 on the season after a 77-71 loss at Central Missouri.
• The Hawks are led by first-year head coach Drew Diener. In his seventh season as a college head coach, he has compiled a 169-44 record.
• The Hawks return four starters from last season's squad that went 7-19 overall and 3-15 in GLVC play.
• Rockhurst shot 52 percent in their season-opener and made 40 field goals.
• Freshman Austin LeVan led the team with 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting, including six made three-pointers.
• Four other Hawks finished in double figures; Dominique Washington (12), Alex Hagan (11), Will Kathrein (11) and Joshua Brannon (10).
• The Hawks out-rebounded CBC 52-24 and held them to 24 percent shooting from the floor (10-of-41) and 29 percent from three-point range (6-of-21).
• Rockhurst will host Missouri Southern on Monday, Nov. 23.

 Series History with Rockhurst
•    Saturday's meeting will be the 58th in the all-time series.
•    Washburn leads the all-time series 30-27.
•    Washburn has won 13 of the last 16 meetings.
•    The Ichabods and the Hawks have only played three times since the 2005 season, but played every year between 1992 and 1999.
•    The Ichabods have won six of the last eight meetings played on the Hawks' home court falling last time in Kansas City 48-47. 

 Last meeting with Rockhurst
(Dec. 13, 2014) KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods dropped a 48-47 decision at Rockhurst on Saturday to the Hawks. 
With the Ichabods and the Hawks tied at 44, Washburn (4-7) came up short on three possessions and a jumper by the Hawks Russell Burns gave Rockhurst (4-4) a 46-44 lead with 29 seconds to play. Washburn missed on its next possession and the Hawks' Josh Roberts hit a pair of free throws putting Rockhurst up 48-44. Kyle Wiggins hit a 3-pointer with three seconds to play cutting the lead to one but the Hawks finished out the clock taking the one point win.
The Hawks led by as many as 10 in the first half before the  Ichabods finished the stanza on an 8-1 run holding Rockhurst without a field goal for the final 7:06 of the half. All of the points by the Ichabods in the first half came from three players as Alex North and Kyle Wiggins each had nine and Turon Parker recorded seven. 
North led the Ichabods with a game-high 17 points adding eight rebounds. Kyle Wiggins had 12 points and Parker finished with 11. Rockhurst had no players reach double figures as three different players had eight.
The Ichabods finished 19 of 53 from the field hitting 4 of 14 3-point attempts while the Hawks started the game 4 of 7 from 3-point range but finished 7 of 23 overall from deep. The Hawks were 17 of 52 from the field overall and finished 7 of 10 from the free throw line. The Ichabods were 5 of 12 from the charity stripe going 1 of 4 in the second half.
The Ichabods' 47 points scored was the second-fewest scored by an Ichabod in a loss topping only the 45 points scored against Truman on Jan. 13, 2007. The 48 points scored by Rockhurst were the fewest points allowed in a loss topping the 50 scored by Northwest Missouri on March 8, 2008 and the 95 combined points were the fewest in a game in school history. 

 Last time out for Rockhurst
(Nov. 18, 2015) Rockhurst rallied from a 15-point deficit to pull within three points before falling at Central Missouri, 77-71, Wednesday night in Warrensburg, Mo.
The Hawks fell behind 59-44 with 12 minutes left to play. Rockhurst went on a 22-10 run over the next eight minutes to cut UCM's lead to 69-66 on a layup by Alex Hagan with 4:04 remaining. Central Missouri scored its last five points at the free-throw line.
Rockhurst shot 55.6 percent from the field in the second half while outscoring the Mules 38-35 over the final 20 minutes.
Malachi Nix led the Hawks with 15 points, eight assists, six rebounds and two steals. Freshman Austin LeVan scored 11 points off the bench. Adam Fatkin posted 10 points and four rebounds. Dominique Washington added nine points.
Rockhurst shot 51.0 percent from the field (26 of 51) and 68.4 percent from the free-throw line (13 of 19). Central Missouri connected on 22-of-54 field goals (40.7 percent) and 26-of-30 free throws (86.7 percent). Spencer Reaves paced the Mules with 16 points.

•     Washburn is the eighth-winningest program in NCAA Division II history by victories.
