Washburn softball team returns to action at SOSU Regional Invite

 Washburn continues season back in Oklahoma for six games . . . 
•    The Washburn Ichabod softball team will head back to Oklahoma for six games starting Feb. 13 in Durant, Okla., at the Southeastern Oklahoma State Regional Invitational.
•    The Ichabods will face host squad Southeastern Oklahoma in the opener and then take on Southwestern Oklahoma for the second time in six days.
•    Washburn will then face Texas A&M-Kingsville at 12:30 p.m. and then Texas A&M-Commerce at 3 p.m. on Feb. 14 before wrapping up the event with St. Mary's (Texas) at 10 a.m. and Newman the next day.

 Warm ups . . . 
•    The Ichabods are coming off a 1-2 weekend at the Southwestern Oklahoma Round Robin after falling to Science and Arts of Oklahoma 8-7 in eight innings and then Eastern New Mexico 14-9. Washburn topped host squad Southwestern Oklahoma 8-0 in five innings to wrap up the round robin.
•    Lauren Thimmesch led the Ichabods with a .556 batting average adding three home runs and six RBI.
•    Haylee Marsteller was 4 for 8 and Jordan Erickson was 5 for 11 with each player adding four RBI.
•    Thimmesch also picked up the win with a complete-game shutout against Southwestern Oklahoma.
•    Savannah Moore hit a 2-run homer in her first collegiate at bat.

 Schedule changes . . . 
•    Originally scheduled to play Texas A&M-Commerce and Texas A&M-Kingsville on Sunday, the Ichabods will now take on St. Mary's at 10 a.m. and Newman on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
•    The Ichabods will face TAMUK and TAMUC on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m.
•    Friday's schedule of Southeastern Oklahoma and Southwestern Oklahoma will remain the same.

 Scouting the field . . . 
Southeastern Oklahoma
•    Is 2-4 after opening at the NFCA Leadoff Classic.
•    Was preseason ranked No. 4 in the country after going 45-20 last season reaching the Division II World Series.
•    Lead the all-time series with the Ichabods 7-2 and have won the last seven times the teams have played.
•    Washburn's last win over the Storm was on Feb. 23, 2007 in a 4-3 win.
Southwestern Oklahoma
•    The Bulldogs enter the invitational with a 1-5 record after going 1-3 at their own event.
•    The Ichabods lead the all-time series 9-0 with the Bulldogs after the win on last Sunday in Weatherford.
Texas A&M-Kingsville
•    TAMUK is 2-0 so far this season after sweeping Texas A&M-International 4-2 and 1-0.
•    The Javelinas are scheduled to face St. Edward's on Feb. 10 before heading to the regional invite.
•    The Ichabods are 0-2 all-time against the Javelinas and have not played each other since a March 6, 2004 1-0 loss in eight innings. 
•    The first meeting on Feb. 7, 2004 was also a 1-0 for TAMUK.
St. Mary's (Texas)
•    The Rattlers were ranked No. 16 in the NFCA Preseason Poll and enter the regional with a 6-0 record.
•    The Ichabods lead the all-time series 4-2 and Washburn won the last meeting on March 4, 2012 6-4.
Newman
•    The Ichabods lead the all-time series with the Jets 8-0.
•    The two teams haven't met since a Feb. 19, 2011 game in an Ichabods 7-0 win. Prior to that game the teams had played since the 2001 season.
•    The Jets are 1-1 entering the regional crossover.

The Ichabods have outscored their opponents 8-0 in the first innings of games this season and 5-1 in both third and fourth innings … Savannah Moore's five at bats against Eastern New Mexico was one shy of the school record … Haylee Marsteller's three walks against Eastern New Mexico are tied for second all-time at Washburn. 

 Ichabod head coach Vanessa Becerra . . . 
• was named the Washburn Ichabod head softball coach on Aug. 3, 2011 after spending four seasons at Metro State in Denver, Colo., with the final season coming as the head coach. 
• is 53-82 in her fourth season on the bench at Washburn and overall Becerra has recorded a 87-100 mark in her fifth year as a head coach.
• in her lone season as the head coach at Metro State, Becerra led the Roadrunners the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular season championship while advancing to the NCAA regional tournament for the third-straight season finishing with a 34-18 record. 
• has coached 12 Ichabods to all-MIAA honors.
• has had 38 Ichabods named to the MIAA's Academic Honor Roll.

 Ichabod softball history. . . 
• The Ichabods are 1068-789-1 in their 46th year of softball. 
• The Ichabods have made three NCAA Tournament appearances (1999, 2006, 2008). 
• Washburn won the 2002 regular season MIAA title.

 Up next . . . 
•     The Ichabods will return to action on Feb. 28 at the Missouri Southern Zenner Memorial Classic on Feb. 28-March 1 in Joplin, Mo., with four games. Washburn will have its home opener on March 4 against Rockhurst starting at 4 p.m.
