TOPEKA, Kan. -- The No. 21/19-ranked Washburn Ichabod baseball team was swept in an MIAA doubleheader with Missouri Western falling 6-4 and 11-1 on Saturday at Falley Field. The four-game series will wrap up on Sunday starting at 1 p.m. with the Ichabods needing a win to split the series.
Game 1 - Missouri Western 6, Washburn 4The Griffons got on the board first with two runs in the inning, but the Ichabods came back with three of their own in the bottom of the first when
Kyle Carnahan drove in
Riley Krane who tripled and then
David Gauntt hit the first of his two home runs in the opening game puttnig Washburn up 3-2. The Griffons tied the score at 3-3 with a run in the top of the third, but Gauntt's seventh home run of the season put Washburn back up 4-3 through three innings. The Griffons scored three unearned runs with two outs taking the 6-4 lead as the Ichabods went down in order in the seventh. Krane had two hits as did Gauntt while Gauntt finished with 3 RBI and scored twice.
Hank Wellborn took the loss allowing three runs (none earned) as Washburn lost the first game.
Game 2 - Missouri Western 11, Washburn 1The Ichabods (17-5, 11-4 MIAA) were limited to five hits in the second game as the Griffons' starter Banks Born pitched the complete game improving to 3-0 on the season. Missouri Western (16-8, 11-4 MIAA) led 1-0 after two innings, but sent 11 batters to the plate in the fifth inning scoring six times breaking the game open and then added three more in the sixth cruising to the 11-1 win. Washburn's lone run came in the sixth inning when
Connor Crimmins drove in
Kyle Carnahan who walked earlier in the inning. Gauntt, Carnahan, Crimmins,
Tanner Johnson and
Payton Soicher all had hits for the Ichabods.
Zach Linquist (2-2) took the loss striking out two pitching four innings.
