Ichabods come up short in MIAA sweep by Mules

TOPEKA, Kan. - The Washburn Ichabod baseball team was swept in an MIAA doubleheader 3-1 in the opener and 5-4 in the nightcap with Central Missouri falling behind 2-1 in the series with the Mules. The four-game set will wrap up on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Game 1 - Central Missouri 3, Washburn 1
The Washburn Ichabod baseball team was limited to three hits by Mules starter Tyler House in the 3-1 loss in the opener. 

The Mules scored solo runs in the first and second innings jumping out to a 2-0 lead before the Ichabods got on the board with a double in the third inning by Riley Krane which scored Wes Jones who led off the inning with a walk cutting the Central Missouri lead to 2-1.

Central added another run in the sixth inning stretching its lead to 3-1 as the Mules evened the series 1-1.

Maustin Otterstatter pitched three innings allowing two earned runs scattering six hits taking the loss. Hank Wellborn pitched three innings allowing a run and striking out four in relief.

Krane finished with two hits.

House improved to 4-2 with the win striking out five for the Mules. 

Game 2 - ?Central Missouri 5, Washburn 4
In the second game, the Ichabods fell behind as the Mules scored four in the third inning taking the 4-0 lead as the Mules took advantage of a Washburn error with a pair of the runs coming across as unearned.

The Ichabods came back with a solo run on a sac fly by Krane scoring Payton Soicher who led off the inning with a double. Central added another unearned run in the fifth inning going up 5-1.

In the seventh, Washburn scored three runs and had the tying run at first but could not tie the game falling 5-4. In the seventh, Zane Mapes reached on a single and then Krane followed with a single of his own and then with the bases loaded Kyle Carnahan drove in two with a single to center. A sac fly by Connor Crimmins scored one more making the final score 5-4.

Mike Hefferan took the loss pitching 2 1/3 innings falling to 3-1 on the season. Jake Heissler pitched six innings striking out four allowing one earned run for the Mules improving to 4-1 this season.

Krane had two hits and six others recorded one.
