MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods hit six home runs a twinbill completing a four-game MIAA series sweep over Northwest Missouri winning 9-5 and 13-5. Washburn returns to action on Wednesday hosting Fort Hays State in a single nine inning game starting at 6 p.m. at Falley Field.
In the doubleheader
Connor Crimmins was 7 for 9 with 9 RBI, three runs scored and two home runs including the Ichabods' eighth grandslam of the season. The NCAA record is nine in a single season.
Game 1 - WU 9, NWMSU 5The Ichabods hit three home runs in the opening game using a grandslam by Crimmins in the top of the seventh breaking a 5-5 tie propelling the Ichabods to the win.Â
Entering the seventh inning with the score tied at 5-5,
Payton Soicher led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a sac bunt by
Riley Krane. A single by
Parker Gibson moved the runners up and with an open base, the Bercats decided to intentionally walk
David Gauntt, Crimmins cleared the bases with a home run to left center for Washburn's eighth grand slam of the season.
Washburn held the Bearcats scoreless in the seventh for the 9-5 win.
Washburn scored two in the first inning with an RBI double by
Kyle Carnahan and an RBI single by Crimmins. The Bearcats tied the score with two of their own in the bottom of the second before Washburn added two in the top of the third taking a 4-2 lead.
After a Carnahan single, Gauntt picked up and RBI double to center and then Crimmins had a sac fly scoring Gauntt.
Washburn added a solo run in the fifth inning on a solo home run by Carnahan.
Mike Hefferan pitched five innings and gave way to
Tanner Kilmer who pitched two innings for the win improving to 6-3 on the season.
Crimmins finished with a career-high 6 RBI going 2 for 3. Carnahan finished 3 for 4 with 3 runs scored and 2 RBI.
Game 2 - WU 13, NWMSU 5Washburn again hit three home runs in the nightcap wrapping up the sweep in the 13-5 win.
Washburn (26-17, 19-13 MIAA) scored three in the first capped by back to back home runs by Carnahan and his eighth of the season which was followed by Gauntt's team-high 13th of the season.
Northwest Missouri (19-24, 14-18 MIAA) tied the score with three in the bottom of the third and the Bearcats would go on to take the lead with two more in the fourth inning.
In the fifth, Washburn sent nine to the plate taking a 6-5 lead as Gauntt drove in another run with an RBI single to left and Crimmins recorded an RBI to left as well. Carnahan had a sac fly in the inning as well.
A solo home run by Soicher in the sixth inning put the Ichabods up 7-5.
THe Ichabods put the game away with four runs in teh eighth inning with a 2-RBI single by Soicher and a bases loaded walk by
Tanner Johnson with an RBI single by Carnahan.
Crimmins' second home run of the day in the ninth inning on a 2-run homer scoring Gibson wrapped up the scoring and the 13-5 win.
Carnahan drove in four while Crimmins finished 3 for 4 with two runs scored and 3 RBI and Soicher was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and 3 RBI. Gibson had two hits and scored three times.
Ryne Dowling pitched two scoreless innings for the win improving to 2-0 on the season.
