Ichabods look for win at UCO in 5th homecoming game of the season

Opening Notes
•      The Washburn Ichabod football team will play in its fifth homecoming game of the season as they will travel to Edmond, Okla., to take on the Central Oklahoma Bronchos in Wantland Stadium on Nov. 5 with a 2 p.m. kickoff.
•       The Ichabods (6-3, 6-3 MIAA) are coming off a 16-13 win over Missouri Western on Washburn's Homecoming last time out.
•      Washburn also has played in Homecoming games at Nebraska-Kearney (W 47-44 in 3ot), at Missouri Southern (W 45-13) and at Central Missouri (L 29-27).
•      The Bronchos (2-7, 2-7 MIAA) lost their last game falling at Central Missouri 48-28 in Warrensburg.
•      Washburn is part of a two-way tie for fourth place in the MIAA standings with Fort Hays State …  Northwest Missouri is 8-0 and Emporia State is 7-1 followed by Central Missouri  at 7-2.
•      Washburn improved to 47-43 all-time on its homecoming since it was first played during the 1920-21 school year.
•      Washburn received votes this week in the AFCA Top 25 Coaches Poll.
•      With the win over Missouri Western, the Ichabods clinched their 11th winning season under head coach Craig Schurig in his 15 seasons.
•      The Ichabods are looking for their first win in Wantland Stadium after falling 35-20 on Sept. 22, 2012 and 35-26 on Oct. 25, 2014.
•      The Bronchos lead the all-time series 3-2 and have won the last two games played between the teams including a 38-27 win in Topeka on Washburn's Homecoming game on Oct. 24, 2015 on the Ichabods' Grand 150th Homecoming Celebration.

•      When passing, Washburn is 35 of 67 on first down, 35 of 69 on second down, 41 of 100 on third down and 3 of 8 on fourth down.
•      This season, Washburn has ran the ball on first down 246 times compared to 78 passing attempts … on second down its 136 to 80 run to pass and on third down its 103 to 42 pass to run.
•      The Ichabods are 11th in the MIAA in penalties with 73 for 680 yards averaging 75.6 yards per game … Washburn is eighth in opponent penalties at 59 for an average of 57.4 yards per game.

Central Oklahoma head coach Nick Bobeck . . .

Ichabod Defensive Notes
•      Cody Heiman leads the team with 73 tackles with 35 solo stops adding 5.0 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks with two interceptions and 10 passes defended adding a 60-yard fumble recovery against Missouri Southern for a touchdown … he went over the 200 career tackle mark against Missouri Southern and now has 223 at Washburn … Heiman is 11th in the MIAA in tackles … he needs 19 tackles to move into the top 15 on the Ichabod all-time chart.
•      Austin Tillman is second on the team with 69 tackles recording a career-high 13 against the Lopers earlier this season and ranks 14th in the MIAA in tackles.
•      Akhmad Abdul-Razzaq is fourth in the MIAA in sacks and ranks 17th in tackles for loss for 8.0 for 50 yards and he is fourth in the MIAA in sacks with 4.5 for 38 yards … he is fourth on the Ichabods with 47 tackles … he is fifth in tackles for loss all-time at Washburn with 30 and his 12.5 sacks is eighth all-time as an Ichabod.
•  Spenser Matthews leads the Ichabods with 12.0 tackles for loss for 30 yards and has 4.0  sacks for 15 yards … he is ranked sixth in the MIAA in tackles for loss and he is 11th in sacks … for his Ichabod career he is seventh in sacks (14.5) and tied for sixth in tackles for loss (29.5) … his 79 yards for tackles for loss is third all-time at Washburn.
•      Trevin Wiens is fourth on the team with 47 tackles including eight pass break ups and 11 deflections … he is tied for the team lead with three interceptions this season.
•      Corey Ballentine is third on the team with 51 tackles and has 6.5 tackles for loss for 21 yards and had a career-high nine tackles against Missouri Western.
•      The game-clinching interception by Keaton Cofield was his third of his Washburn career.
•      Cedric Gonzalez recorded his first interception as a member of the Ichabods against Missouri Western and also had a sack and two tackles for loss against the Griffons.
•      Josh Wright had a career-high four tackles against the Griffons.
•  The Ichabods have the fourth-best total defense in the league allowing 388.9 yards per game … Northwest Missouri leads the league allowing 257.7 yards per game … Central Oklahoma has the eighth-best overall defense allowing 464.9 yards per game.
•      Washburn is second in the league in rush defense allowing 113.3 yards per game trailing Northwest Missouri (73.0 ypg) … Central Oklahoma is seventh in the MIAA in rush defense allowing  168.0 yards per game.
•       The Ichabods are fourth in the league in sacks with 21 for 105 yards … Fort Hays State leads the league with 30 sacks … Central Oklahoma has recorded 11 sacks for 55 yards ranking 11th in the league.
•      Washburn's scoring defense is sixth in the MIAA allowing 28.6 points per game.
 
Ichabod Offensive Notes
•      Mickeel Stewart is ninth in the MIAA in rushing averaging 56.4 yards per game … he had a career-high 21 rushes for a career-high 108 yards against Missouri Southern.
•      Jake Horner is ranked 11th in the MIAA in receiving averaging 65.4 yards per game.
•       Derek McGinnis went over the 4,000-yard  career passing mark against Central Missouri becoming the eighth Ichabod to pass for at least 4,000 yards in a career (4,202) … he needs 577 yards to move into sixth all-time … his 37 touchdown passes are fifth all-time on the Ichabod chart.
•      Bryce Chavis recorded two touchdowns for the fourth time in his career against Fort Hays State … he has 1,192 career receiving yards and 77 catches.
•      The Ichabods are seventh in scoring offense at 30.1 ppg in the MIAA rankings and eighth in total offense at 386.2 yards per game.
•      Washburn has the fifth-best rushing offense in the league at 170.2 yards per game and it is ranked 11th in passing offense at 216 yards per game … Central Oklahoma is eighth in passing offense at 259.4 yards per game.
•      Michael Shirk recorded his first career reception against Missouri Western for seven yards out of the backfield.
•      Carey Woods had a career-highs of three receptions and 70 yards against Missouri Western.
 
Ichabod Special Team Notes
•  Perry Schmiedeler is third in the MIAA in kick scoring at 7.9 points per game and ranked fourth overall in the MIAA in scoring.
•      Schmiedeler is fourth in the MIAA in punting with a 40.3 ypp. average … Washburn is fourth in the MIAA in net punting at 37.2 ypp.
•      Schmiedeler set a career-high with six extra points against Missouri Southern … his 62  career extra points is 11th on the all-time chart at Washburn.
•      Schmiedeler tied a career-high with three field goals against Missouri Western including a career-long make of 50 yards en route to MIAA Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
•      The 50-yard field goal is tied for the fourth-longest in school history trailing Russ Hill and Charles Goodknight (52 yards), Justin Linn (51 yards) and Justin Linn (50 yards).
 
Know the Foe
•      Central Oklahoma enters the contest at 2-7 overall and in MIAA play after falling 48-28 at Central Missouri last Saturday.
•      UCO is eighth in the MIAA in scoring at 29.3 points per game and sits 11th in scoring defense, allowing 41.1 points per game.
•      The Bronchos are fifth in total offense (450.9 ypg) and eighth in total defense (464.9 ypg allowed). They rank third in rushing (191.4 ypg), seventh in rushing defense (168.0 ypg allowed), eighth in passing (259.4 ypg) and 10th in passing defense (296.9 ypg allowed) and last in passing defense efficiency (170.4).
•      The Bronchos have used two quarterbacks this season, T.J. Eckert and Chas Stallard. Eckert has played in all nine games, completing 57.5 percent of his passes for 1,672 yards but just two touchdowns to nine interceptions. Stallard is 47-of-80 for 663 yards with seven TDs and six interceptions.
•      Jake Gandara has rushed for 592 yards and six touchdowns, while Clay McKenzie has 579 yards rushing and 12 touchdowns. Gandara averages 5.2 yards per carry, while McKenzie sits at 4.7 per attempt.
•      Connor Pulley leads the UCO receiving corps with 41 catches for 728 yards and five touchdowns. Rodriguez Coleman has 35 grabs for 407 yards and Josh Crockett adds 34 catches for 643 yards and two TDs.
•      Defensively, Riley Galyon leads the team with 74 tackles, including 55 solo stops. He also has one interception and one tackle for loss.
•      Carson Smith leads the team with 6.5 tackles for loss, while Brandon Calip has two of the four interceptions.
•      As a unit, the UCO defense has 45 tackles for loss, 11 sacks and four interceptions.
•      The Bronchos are minus-16 in turnover margin this season.
•      Kicker Seth Hiddink is 10-of-12 in field goal attempts with a season-long of 48 yards.
•      UCO leads the MIAA in time of possession averaging 32:24 per game.

Last Meeting With Central Oklahoma
(10/24/2015) TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods fell 38-27 to Central Oklahoma as the Bronchos spoiled the Homecoming encounter in Yager Stadium.
The Bronchos took the lead with 6:12 to play in the first quarter when Darrack Harger scored for the only points in the first half. In the second quarter, the Ichabods tied the score on a 62-yard pass play from Derek McGinnis to Bryce Chavis knotting the score at 7-7 with 13:53 to play in the first half.
After a punt by the Bronchos, Washburn turned it over on a fumble on its punt on its next possession and the Bronchos' Seth Hiddink hit a 31-yard field goal with 7:57 to play in the half taking a 10-7 lead after the short field for UCO.
Neither team would score until 40 seconds before the half when McGinnis found Michael Lickteig in the back of the end zone putting Washburn up 14-10 heading into the locker room.
Coming out after halftime, Central Oklahoma scored in three plays going up 17-14 and after a Washburn punt, UCO needed only five more plays going 29 yards after a big punt return to increase its lead to 24-14 with 10:41 to play in the third quarter.
Washburn responded with a 7-play, 75-yard drive when Hayden Groves scored on a 44-yard touchdown run up the middle pulling Washburn within 24-20.
The Ichabod defense forced another Broncho punt on their next possession and Brandon Bourbon scored on a 29-yard touchdown run putting the Ichabods in front 27-24 with 6:46 to play in the third quarter.
Washburn and Central Oklahoma traded punts and UCO took the lead for good on an 82-yard touchdown pass from TJ Eckert to Myles Tease with 2:47 to play in the third quarter.
UCO increased its lead to 38-27 on a 1-yard touchdown run with 2:43 to play in the game for the only points in the fourth quarter.
Peter Pfannenstiel had 12 tackles to lead the Ichabod defense and Jaime Myers and Alec Steuber each had eight tackles. Jordan Nelson had an interception while Akhmad Abdul-Razzaq had seven tackles and a sack.
Bourbon rushed for a Washburn-high 136 yards on 26 carries and one score and Groves finished with 93 yards on 15 carries. Chavis finished with 101 yards receiving on six catches to lead the Ichabod receivers. McGinnis was 9 of 22 for 120 yards and two scores.
Washburn had 15 first downs in the game while UCO had 21, with two aided by Ichabod penalties. Washburn had 237 yards rushing and UCO finished with 175 on the ground. Through the air, UCO had 304 yards and Washburn was limited to 120. Overall UCO outgained Washburn 479 to 357.
 
Last Time Out For Central Oklahoma ...
(Oct. 29, 2016) WARRENSBURG, Mo. - Chas Stallard, Clay McKenzie, and Jake Gandara each ran for a touchdown on Saturday against Central Missouri, but the Bronchos offense couldn't keep up the high pace and Central Missouri won 48-28 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play.
The Bronchos led 14-0 in the first quarter after Stallard and McKenzie scored. UCO led 14-13 at halftime, but Central Missouri's offense never let up in the second half.
The Bronchos tallied 447 total yards on the day, 271 rushing and 176 passing. Stallard finished with 108 yards on 18 carries and completed 15 of 28 passes for 157 yards including a 42-yard score to L'liott Curry in the third quarter. But turnovers plagued the Bronchos once again.
Stallard fumbled early in the game when he was sacked. Central Missouri only needed to go five yards to score. Stallard also threw two interceptions on the day. Central Missouri took one of those 51 yards for the final touchdown of the game.
McKenzie also eclipsed the 100-yard mark. The junior finished with 105 yards on 13 carries including an 18-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Jake Gandara finished with 53 yards on 13 carries. He also had an 18-yard score on the day.
Riley Galyon led the defensive effort for the Bronchos with 10 tackles. Unfortunately for Central Oklahoma, the defense couldn't force a turnover, which hindered the effort in another high-scoring MIAA affair.
 
Last Time Out For The Ichabods
(10/29/2106) Topeka, Kan. -- TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn Ichabods picked off three Missouri Western passes including one in the end zone on the final play of the game while kicking three field goals leading to a 16-13 win over the Griffons on homecoming Saturday in Yager Stadium. With the win the Ichabods recorded their second-straight win over the Griffons and improved to 6-2 on the season.
With the Ichabods holding the 16-13 lead, Washburn was stopped on a fourth-and-two from the Griffon 19 turning the ball over to Western with 1:24 left in the game. The Griffons took advantage of two Ichabod penalties and moved the ball to the Ichabod nine yard line with 28 seconds left. The Griffons' spiked the ball to stop the clock and on second down, Keaton Cofield picked off Corey Bertini in the back of the endzone wrapping up the Homecoming victory for the Ichabods.
The Griffons took a 3-0 lead on their first drive of the game and then the Ichabods tied the score on the first of Perry Schmiedeler's three field goals on the afternoon with a 27-yard conversion with 5:00 left in the first quarter.
Missouri Western went up 6-3 after a 24-yard field goal of its own on the ensuing possession with 2:20 left in the opening quarter. The Griffons, who dropped to 4-6 on the season, stretched their lead to 13-3 when Bertini hit Dijuan Ussery on a 45-yard touchdown pass with 7:47 left in the first half.
The Ichabods came back with a score of its own when Wesley Collins scored on a 1-yard plunge with 44 seconds left in the half to trim the Griffon lead to 13-10 entering the break.
After trading punts to start the second half, Schmiedeler hit a 43-yard field goal tying the score at 13 with 9:31 to go in the third quarter as the defense set the Ichabod offense up at the Griffon 23 after Peter Pfannenstiel stripped Ussery of the ball which was recovered by Austin Tillman.
On the Griffons' next possession, Trevin Wiens picked off Bertini and returned it to the Western 36-yard line. Washburn's drive stalled, but Schmiedeler hit a career-long 50-yard field goal with 6:46 to play putting Washburn up 16-13 wrapping up the scoring for both teams as the teams combined for 82 rushing yards and 51 passing yards in the fourth quarter.
Washburn's defense was led by Corey Ballentine and Cody Heiman who each had nine tackles. Tillman had seven with a tackle for loss and a fumble recovery.
Offensively Mickeel Steart had 68 yards on 13 carries and Collins finished with 50 yards on 14 carries and a score. Derek McGinnis was 10 of 20 for 145 and was sacked three times. James Brania-Hopp had four catches for 42 yards.
Washburn finished with 296 total yards while the Griffons had 361 overall with 109 coming on the ground.
Washburn will hit the road for the final time next Saturday in Edmond, Okla., when they will take on Central Oklahoma for the Bronchos' homecoming game.

Under head coach Craig Schurig, the Ichabods have been ranked or have received votes in the AFCA poll 56 times and have been ranked in the top 10 a total of 15 times.
