Washburn 76, Southwestern Oklahoma -- Nov. 12, 2016
WEATHERFORD, Okla. -- The Washburn Ichabods withstood an 18-5 run over the final 8:23 of the game by Southwestern Oklahoma State going without a field goal for the final 8:37 of the contest holding on for a 76-73 win over the Bulldogs.
The Ichabods were 0 of 10 from the field down the stretch hitting 5 of 9 free throws for the win, which was victory No. 790 for Ichabod head coach
Bob Chipman.
Washburn led by as many as 12 in the first half after a 3-pointer by
Isaac Clark with 1:39 to play in the frame as the Ichabods took a 42-33 lead into the locker room over the host Bulldogs (0-2) after shooting 53 percent from the field holding Southwestern Oklahoma to 42 percent shooting.
The Ichabods pushed their lead to 19 points on a
Cameron Wiggins' 3-pointer with 16:33 to play but were outscored 36 to 20 the rest of the way as Washburn cooled off to 6 of 24 shooting from the field, including a 3 of 11 performance from 3-point range while the Bulldogs heated up to 11 of 21 from the field.
Washburn never trailed in the second half, but led at 74-71 with 61 seconds to play after a pair of free throws by Collin Jennings. After a missed lay up by the Ichabods, Markeise Champion hit a jumper with 17 seconds remaining cutting the lead to 74-73.
The Bulldogs fouled and
Randall Smith hit both free throws going up 76-73 with 14 seconds to play and the Bulldogs were unable to get off a shot in the final seconds leading to the Washburn win.
Wiggins led the Ichabods with 21 points hitting seven 3-pointers and
Brady Skeens recorded his first double double of the season and his 11th of his career with 19 points and 12 rebounds with seven coming off the offensive end adding three blocks.
Javion Blake and
David Salach each had 11 points. Smith scored four points dishing out seven assists.
Washburn finished 44 percent from the field hitting 29 of 65 shots and 9 of 27 3-pointers in the contest going 9 of 18 from the free throw line.
The Bulldogs were 26 of 58 overall and 7 of 18 from 3-point range and hit 14 of 16 free throws.
Washburn was outrebounded 40 to 36 in the game and outscored the Bulldogs 36 to 26 in the paint.Â

Junior center Will Kathrein, sophomore forward Conner Evans and sophomore guard John Burton also return from last year.

Last time out for Rockhurst
(Nov. 16, 2016) KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Rockhurst jumped out to a 22-point halftime lead over Emporia State and held off the Hornets down the stretch to post an 81-78 victory Wednesday night at Mason-Halpin Field House.
Freshman Undra Wilson made a layup with 35 seconds left and Alex Hagan hit two free throws nine seconds later to secure the Hawks' second win of the season.
Rockhurst shot 50.0 percent from the field (28 of 55) and 41.7 percent on three-point shots (10 of 24). The Hawks connected on 59.4 percent of their field goals (19 of 32) in the first half. Travis House made five of the Hawks' eight 3-point field goals in the first 20 minutes to help give Rockhurst a 50-28 halftime lead.
Hagan led the Hawks with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Hagan made six-of-nine field goals, including canning all three of his three-point shots. House came off the bench to score 17 points. Mason Loewen scored 16 points. Malachi Nix finished with 11 points and three steals. Wilson added six points and four assists.

Last meeting with Rockhurst
(Nov. 25, 2015) TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabod men's basketball team lost for the first time this season in a 75-51 loss to Rockhurst on Saturday afternoon in Lee Arena.
After the Ichabods hit their first shot of the day, a 3-pointer by
Javion Blake, giving Washburn its only lead of the game, Rockhurst (2-1) ripped off a 15-2 run over the next 6:28 as the Ichabods missed their next 13 shots while Rockhurst connected on 4 of 6 shots including 3 of 5 3-pointers building a 15-5 lead.
Tyas Martin's lay up with 12:55 to play broke the run by Rockhurst.
After a bucket by
David Salach with 11:04 to play in the first half cut the lead back to eight at 17-9, Rockhurst built its lead out to 17 using an 11-2 run. Washburn (2-1) would get as close as 11 near in the end of the half but trailed by 14 at the break 37-23.
In the second half the Ichabods cut the lead to 13 twice with the final time coming with 11:35 to play in the game but would not get any closer as the Hawks snapped the Ichabods' 32-game, regular season, non-conference homecourt winning streak.
Blake led the Ichabods with nine points and
Cameron Wiggins had eight.
Brady Skeens tied for a game-high with 11 rebounds while scoring four points recording three blocks. Malachi Nix scored a game-high 18 points leading four Hawks in double figures.
Washburn finished the game 16 of 51 for a 31 percent average while the Hawks were 25 of 52 for a 48 percent clip. Rockhurst hit 11 of 21 3-pointers while Washburn was 2 of 14. The Hawks also held a 37-30 advantage on the glass.

University on Nov. 23 and then take on Universidad Metropolitana on Friday and then wrap up the trip with Lubbock Christian on Saturday. The Ichabods will return home to take on Manhattan Christian on Dec. 1 and Newman on Dec. 3 before opening MIAA play at Fort Hays State on Dec. 7 and at Nebraska-Kearney on Dec. 10. Washburn will wrap up the 2016 calendar year with MIAA contests against Lindenwood on Dec. 17 and Lincoln on Dec. 19.
