Washburn men's basketball team opens MIAA home slate with Lions

Opening Tip
•   The Washburn Ichabod men's basketball team returns to Lee Arena to play host to the Lindenwood Lions at 7 p.m. on Dec. 17 in Topeka.
•   Washburn is 8-2 and 0-2 in the MIAA after falling in its first two conference games this season falling at Fort Hays State 89-82 on Dec. 7 and at Nebraska-Kearney last time out on Dec. 10 in a 93-80 defeat.
•   The Lions are 7-3 on the year and 1-1 in the MIAA after losing to Missouri Southern on Dec. 10 in a 71-55 contest. The Lions' MIAA win came against Pittsburg State 89-83.
•   Brady Skeens was named the MIAA Player of the Week for the second time this season this week … he is second in the nation in blocked shots with 4.0 per game.
•   The Ichabods as a team lead the nation in blocks at 7.0 per game.
•   This season will be Bob Chipman's last season on the bench at Washburn … Chipman announced prior to the start of the season this year would be his last … Chipman has recorded a career-record of 796-345 at Washburn needing only four wins to reach 800 for his career becoming only the 14th coach to reach that milestone.
•   The Ichabods lead the all-time series with Lindenwood 4-1 and have won the last two.
•   Cameron Wiggins is ranked 11th in the MIAA in scoring at 15.2 ppg, Brady Skeens is 14th at 14.6 ppg and Javion Blake is 25th at 12.7 ppg while David Salach is ranked 31st at 11.0 ppg.
•   Wiggins' 3-point field goal percentage of 52 percent (34 of 65) is fourth in the MIAA and his 3.4 made 3-pointers per game is first in the MIAA.
•   Brady Skeens leads the league in rebounding at 11.4 rpg, field goal percentage at 71 percent (65 of 92) and blocks at 4.0 per game … he is also ranked ninth in assists and 15th in minutes at 30.9 per game.
•   Randall Smith's 4.1 assists per game is fifth in the MIAA this season.
•   Brady Skeens' 113 career blocks are the most in school after passing Ewan Auguste (100) on the all-time chart against Newman … he had a school-record 61 last season in 28 games … this season he has 40 in 10 games.

•    is in his 38th and final season at the helm of the Ichabods.

Last Time Out For The Ichabods
Nebraska-Kearney 93, Washburn 80 -- Dec. 10, 2016
KEARNEY, Neb. -- The Washburn Ichabods fell behind 7-0 and coupled with a Nebraska-Kearney team who shot 57 percent from 3-point range was too much for Washburn to overcome as they dropped to 0-2 in MIAA play and 8-2 overall in a 93-80 loss to the Lopers.
Washburn was led by Brady Skeens who scored a career-high 23 points adding nine rebounds with six assists and five blocks to lead the Ichabods going 11 of 13 from the field. Javion Blake finished with 18 points followed by Randall Smith with 15 and David Salach with 11.
Washburn trailed 44-37 at the break and cut the lead to four in the second half before the Lopers would pull away.
UNK finished 60 percent from the field hitting 31 of 52 shots and went 57 percent from 3-point range hitting 12 of 21 attempts. UNK was also 19 of 25 from the free throw line compared to 15 of 18 for the Ichabods. Washburn shot 52 percent from the field in the game going 30 of 58 overall and 5 of 12 from 3-point range.
The loss was the sixth-straight to the Lopers. Ty Dannielson led the Lopers with 28 points hitting 4 of 6 shots from 3-point range and 10 of 11 free throw attempts.

Last Meeting with Lindenwood
(Feb. 13, 2016) ST. CHARLES, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabod men's basketball team gutted out a 59-57 win at Lindenwood on Saturday sweeping its second-straight season series in the process.
Washburn took the lead with 25 seconds left on a Randall Smith layup forcing a time out by the Lions. A 3-point attempt by the Lions at the buzzer missed after an in bounds pass as the Ichabods improved to 14-9 and 10-8 in the MIAA.
The Ichabods would lead by as many as eight in the first half at 16-8 after a jumper by Christian Ulsaker who scored nine in the opening half. The Lions never led in the first half, but tied the score at 23 on a jumper before the break.
Washburn was 9 of 23 in the first half while the Lions were 8 of 24. Washburn was 2 of 6 from the 3-point line while the Lions were 1 of 9.
Ulsaker led the Ichabods with 15 points on 6 of 8 shooting and Smith finished with 12. Brady Skeens had nine points and six rebounds and recorded two blocks breaking the Ichabod single-season record giving him 53 on the season.
Cory Arentsen led the Lions with a game-high 33 points scoring 24 in the second half.
Washburn finished 25 of 48 from the field and 16 of 25 in the second half hitting 64 percent from the field.
The game featured 12 ties and 12 lead changes.
 
Last Time Out For The Lions
Missouri Southern 71, Lindenwood 55, -- Dec. 10, 2016
ST. CHARLES, Mo. -- The Lindenwood men's basketball team had its lowest offensive output of the season on Saturday afternoon at Hyland Arena, and the squad fell to Missouri Southern by a 71-55 margin.
Lindenwood shot just 37.5 percent from the field, including 28.1 percent in the second half when Missouri Southern pulled away in the contest. Lindenwood was also just 25 percent from three-point range, and shot less than 50 percent from the free-throw line.
Missouri Southern shot 47.2 percent from the field, including 62.5 percent in the second half. Missouri Southern outrebounded Lindenwood by seven boards, and had one more three-pointer and seven more made free throws in the game.
Neither team led for more than four points for the first 14 minutes, but Missouri Southern used an 8-0 run to stretch its lead to double-figures. Lindenwood ended the half though on an 11-3 run and trailed by just four at halftime by a 35-31 margin.
Lindenwood came out cold in the second half, which allowed Missouri Southern to score the first six points of the half. For much of the final 20 minutes, Missouri Southern's lead bounced back between seven and 12 points. Lindenwood's last chance to get back into the game came with under seven minutes remaining. Dominique Dobbs had a dunk and LJ McIntosh followed with a three-pointer to get Missouri Southern's lead down to seven. Lindenwood went nearly five minutes without a field goal after that, which allowed Missouri Southern to go on an 11-1 run that clinched the game for it.
Lindenwood had seven more bench points in the game, largely due to Jackson Price having a team-high 11 points. He hit three three-pointers and also had two assists and one steal. Brenon Larson-Gulsvig had double-figure points with 11. Adam Pohlman tied his season-high with eight rebounds, which was a team-high. He and Bakari Triggs both led Lindenwood with three assists apiece.
