Ichabods return to action hosting Lincoln on Monday night

Opening Tip
•   The Washburn Ichabod men's basketball team will wrap up the 2016 calendar year when they will play host to Lincoln on Dec. 19 in Lee Arena.
•   Washburn is 9-2 and 1-2 in the MIAA after topping Lindenwood on Saturday night 78-60.
•   The Blue Tigers are 8-3, 2-1 on the year after defeating Emporia State 69-58 in Emporia on Saturday night.
•   Brady Skeens was named the MIAA Player of the Week for the second time this season this week … he is second in the nation in blocked shots with 3.9 per game.
•   The Ichabods as a team lead the nation in blocks at 6.9 per game.
•   This season will be Bob Chipman's last season on the bench at Washburn … Chipman announced prior to the start of the season this year would be his last … Chipman has recorded a career-record of 797-345 at Washburn needing only four wins to reach 800 for his career becoming only the 16th coach to reach that milestone.
•   The Ichabods lead the all-time series with Lincoln 26-3 and have won the last 26 in a row and have not lost to the Blue Tigers since Dec. 27, 1968 in the Quincy (Ill.) Christmas Tournament.
•   Cameron Wiggins is ranked 11th in the MIAA in scoring at 14.8 ppg, Brady Skeens is 14th at 14.3 ppg and Javion Blake is 25th at 12.5 ppg while David Salach is ranked 31st at 10.2 ppg.
•   Wiggins' 3-point field goal percentage of 54 percent (37 of 69) is fourth in the MIAA and his 3.4 made 3-pointers per game is first in the MIAA.
•   Brady Skeens leads the league in rebounding at 11.4 rpg, field goal percentage at 71 percent (69 of 97) and blocks at 3.9 per game … he is also ranked sixth in assists with 3.8 per game and 15th in minutes at 30.8 per game.
•   Randall Smith's 3.7 assists per game is eighth in the MIAA this season.
•   Brady Skeens' 116 career blocks are the most in school after passing Ewan Auguste (100) on the all-time chart against Newman … he had a school-record 61 last season in 28 games … this season he has 43 in 11 games.
•   Cameron Wiggins hit his 100th career 3-pointer against Lindenwood, which ranks him 13th on the all-time Ichabod chart.

Last Time Out For The Ichabods
Washburn 78, Lindenwood 60 -- Dec. 17, 2016
TOPEKA, Kan. – With the temperatures outside Schendel Court at Lee Arena frigid and in the single digits, the Washburn Ichabod men's basketball team was anything but torching the nets shooting 60 percent from the field in a 78-60 win over Lindenwood on Saturday. With the win the Ichabods improve to 9-2 overall and 1-2 in the MIAA and head coach Bob Chipman picks up win No. 797 in his career.
 The Ichabods trailed early by three at 8-5 just 15 seconds into the game, but a 11-2 run over a five-minute stretch pushed the Ichabods up six at 16-10 with 12:16 to play. Lindenwood came back to cut the lead back down to three at 20-17 before Washburn scored the net 13 points and 16 of the next 18 over a 6:29 stretch to go up by 17 at 3:20 to play in the first half and would go on to take a 15-point advantage into the halftime locker room leading 41-26.
 Washburn shot 57 percent from the field in the first half and 70 percent from deep connecting on 7 of 10 3-point shots.
 Lindenwood would not get any closer than 17 points in the second half as Washburn improved to 63 percent shooting in the second half going 12 of 19 from the field leading to the 18-point win.
 Washburn was led by Randall Smith who paced five Ichabods in double figures with 17 points followed by Isaac Clark with 16 points on 7 of 8 shooting from the field. Brady Skeens had 11 points as did Cameron Wiggins and Javion Blake scored 10. Skeens led the Ichabods with eight rebounds and five assists while swatting three Lindenwood shots.
 The Lions (9-4, 1-2 MIAA) were led by Dominique Dobbs and  Jackson Price who each scored 13.
 Washburn outrebounded the Lions 33 to 29 and finished 10 of 17 from 3-point range compared to  8 of 29 for the Lions. Washburn was 12 of 26 from the free throw line.

About Lincoln
•   Lincoln is 8-3 on the year and 2-1 in the MIAA.
•   They are third in the league in scoring and second in turnover margin.
•   Jaylon Smith is the second-leading scorer in the MIAA at 23.0 points per game while Anthony Virdure is fourth in the league at 19.4 points per game.
 
Series History with Lincoln
•   Monday's meeting will be the 30th in the series history and Washburn leads 26-3.
•   Washburn has won the last 26 meetings in the series which began on Dec. 18, 1957 with the Blue Tigers winning 93-80. Lincoln won the next two and the teams did not meet again until Jan. 24, 1990 when the Ichabods won 98-93 on the road.
•   Washburn has won the last 26 games in the series and the last six match ups by an average margin of 19.8 points per game.
•   Overall the Ichabods are 11-1 against Lincoln in Jefferson City all-time having won their last 11 games with the lone loss coming in 1957 in the first meeting in the series.

Last Meeting with Lincoln
(Jan. 4, 2016) TOPEKA, Kan. -- The streak continues as the Washburn Ichabods won their 26th straight game over Lincoln with an 88-86 win in overtime topping the Blue Tigers.
The road to the 26th-straight win over the Blue Tigers (9-4, 5-2 MIAA) was not an easy one as Washburn (9-3, 5-2 MIAA) ended Lincoln's five-game winning streak while winning its second-straight overtime game. The Blue Tigers built an eight-point lead with 9:08 to play in the game after turning a 53-43 Ichabod lead into a 65-57 Blue Tiger lead after a 20-4 Lincoln run.
Washburn rallied and tied the score at 68 with an 11-3 run of its own as Andy Wilson and Cameron Wiggins each connected on 3-pointers during the run. The Blue Tigers jumped back out to a five point lead at 73-68 after a 5-0 run before Washburn again came back and scored 7 of the last 9 points in regulation capped by a Randall Smith lay up with six seconds left tying the score at 75 sending the game to overtime as Brady Skeens blocked a Blue Tiger layup right before the buzzer with his fourth block of the game.
In overtime, Washburn jumped out to a 79-75 lead before Lincoln would come back and tie the score at 81 with 1:56 to play on a deep 3-pointer by Anthony Virdure, who scored a game-high 31 points leading Lincoln. The Ichabods finished the game with free throws by Javion Blake and Robert Christopher and then a lay up by Blake putting Washburn up 85-81 with 38 seconds to play. A 3-pointer by Virdure with 31 seconds to play cut the lead to one at 85-84.
Cameron Wiggins, who led the Ichabods with 26 points, hit 1 of 2 free throw attempts with 22 seconds to play and the Blue Tigers' 3-point attempt at the buzzer missed as the Ichabods picked up the win.
Other leading scorers for the Ichabods included Blake who scored 20 points and Smith who scored 11 points. Skeens finished with seven points and a game-high 11 rebounds adding four blocks for the second-straight game.
Following Virdure's 31 points, Jaylon Smith scored 26 points and O'Shai Clark had 19 leading the Blue Tigers.
Washburn led 42-41 at the break and finished 27 of 59 from the field and 9 of 21 from 3-point range. The Blue Tigers were 31 of 67 and hit 14 of 30 from 3-point range. Washburn was 23 of 35 from the free throw line and the Blue Tigers were 8 of 15.

LINCOLN 69, EMPORIA STATE 58 -- Dec. 17, 2016
EMPORIA, Kan. -- The Lincoln Blue Tigers rallied from a six-point deficit to win 69-58 at Emporia State on Saturday night in Emporia.
Anthony Virdure, Maurice Mason and Jaylon Smith all had 14 points to lead Lincoln.
The Blue Tigers were outshot by the Hornets 43 percent to 39 percent, but hit three more 3-pointer (7 to 4) and two more free throws (16 to 21) in the win.

 Up next
•   Washburn will be off from games until Jan. 2 when they will wrap up the non-conference schedule by hosting Peru State at 7:30 p.m. as part of the second game of a doubleheader with the Bobcats. Washburn returns to MIAA play starting a three-game road trip at Emporia State on Jan. 7 followed by trips to Northeastern State on Jan. 12 and then Central Oklahoma on Jan. 14. The Ichabods return to Lee Arena on Jan. 19 hosting Missouri Southern.
