EXCELSIOR SPRINGS, Mo. -- The Washburn football team jumped out to an early 10-0 lead, but turnovers and penalties hurt the Ichabods in the final three quarters in a 36-23 loss to Bemidji State in the Mineral Water Bowl in Excelsior Springs, Mo. on Saturday afternoon. Washburn finishes the season 7-5.
Washburn scored first after driving 74 yards in six plays and
Derek McGinnis hit
Bryce Chavis in the back corner of the end zone putting Washburn up 7-0 for the first points of the game after Perry Schmeideler's point after attempt.
On the Beavers' ensuing drive, Jordan Hein fumbled after a
Trey Parker tackle and it was recovered by
Cedric Gonzalez as Washburn set up shop at the Beaver 19. The Ichabods drove down to the seven, but the drive stalled and Schmiedeler kicked his 17th field goal of the season connecting on a 25-yard attempt stretching the Ichabod lead to 10-0 with 6:15 left in the first quarter.
The Ichabod defense forced a turnover on the Beavers' next drive when
Zach Franklin picked off Jordan Hein's pass at the Ichabod eight and returned it 21 yards. After an Ichabod penalty, Washburn drove out the Beaver 46-yard line and
Cody Summers hit
Bryce Chavis on a 46-yard touchdown pass, which would have put the Ichabods up 17-0, but an ineligible receiver down field wiped out the score and the Ichabods would punt four plays later.
Bemidji State scored on its next possession capping a 73-yard drive, but the extra point was blocked by
Josh Wright.Â
Washburn turned it over on its next possession with an interception, but the Beavers came up empty on their next drive and punted it back to the Ichabods.
The Ichabods went three and out on their next drive and the Beavers returned serve with a punt of their own. After another Ichabod punt, the Beavers drove down to the Ichabod five, but a fumble on the play was recovered by
Austin Tillman and returned to the WU 33, but the Ichabods tossed their third interception and the Beavers took advantage of the miscue and took the lead 13-10 with 29 seconds left three plays later as the teams entered the half.
On the Ichabods' first drive, Schmieder hit his second field with a 39-yard connection for his 18th field goal of the season with 11:47 to play in the third quarter tying the score at 13-13.
The Beavers came right back with a seven-play, 76-yard drive when Jordan Hein hit Christian Lunde putting Bemidji State up 20-13 with 10:15 to play in the third quarter.
Keeping pace, the Ichabods scored on a 76-yard drive of their own when McGinnis hit Chavis on a 9-yard pass as the Ichabods tied the score again at 20 with 7:11 to play in the third quarter.
The Beavers needed only one play to go ahead 27-20 on a 50-yard touchdown pass with 6:56 to play. After a three and out by the Ichabods, the Beavers drove down to the Ichabod 47, but
Zach Franklin picked off his second pass of the game with a clear path to the end zone, but was called to have stepped out of bounds returning the ball to the Ichabod 46.
Washburn matriculated the ball down to the Beaver 23 and Schmiedeler hit his third field goal with a 40-yard conversion giving him 19 for the season, tying an Ichabods a single-season record and breaking an Ichabod postseason game record. The kick cut the Beaver lead to 27-23 with 14:24 to play in the game.
However from that point on, Bemidji outscored the Ichabods 9-0 the rest of the way for the 36-23 win.
Washburn was outgained 522 to 353 in the game by the Beavers collection 261 through the air and on the ground in a balanced attack. The Ichabods had 133 yards rushing and 220 through the air.
Mickeel Stewart had 11 carries for 58 yards and
Curtis Whitten had 46 on 10 carries. McGinnis was 12 of 27 for 174 yards and two touchdown passes.
Carey Woods, a Bemidji, Minn., native, had three catches for 87 yards and Chavis finished with five catches for 40 yards and two touchdowns.
Ahkmad Abdul-Razzaq led the Ichabods with nine tackles and
Austin Tillman finished with eight stops.
Derrick McGreevy and
Jalen Durham each had two tackles for loss and Franklin finished with two interceptions.

Perry Schmiedeler's 19 field goals this season tied the Ichabod single-season record with Steve Ivanisevic who hit 19 during the 2009 season.
*Schmiedeler's three field goals set an Ichabod postseason bowl game record and his 40-yard make was also a school postseason game record.
*Washburn finished with 14 penalties for 145 yards. The 14 penalties tied an Ichabod postseason record and the 145 yards was a single-game high.
