GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas – Washburn Baseball was dealt a pair of losses on the final of the SAU DII Classic at the Ballpark at Grand Prairie on Saturday, Feb. 6. The Ichabods fell to Cameron, 4-1, to open the day before the second matchup of the weekend between WU and No. 14 Southern Arkansas went against the Ichabods, 4-3.
WU finished the weekend 2-2 overall and will travel next to Magnolia, Ark., for three games, Feb. 13-14
Cameron 4, Washburn 1The Ichabods were limited to just three hits and couldn't overcome an early deficit in a 4-1 loss to Cameron.
Quentin McGrath (0-1) took the loss in his Washburn debut, pitching five complete innings with three strikeouts, five walks and four runs allowed.
Dan Gabler threw the final three innings for WU in shutout fashion, scattering five CU hits.
At the plate,
Riley Krane,
David Gauntt and
Payton Soicher each had a hit for WU. Gauntt was 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored while
Lance Barkley drew two walks.
CU scored twice in the second inning off three hits, including an RBI double, and later added two more runs in the fourth with three more hits. All told, the Aggies had 11 hits as a team against the Ichabods.
As a team, WU threatened to score throughout the night but left eight runners on base, not scoring until its final chance in the ninth inning. Gauntt was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning before moving to second when Barkley drew a walk, putting runners on first and second with no outs. A wild pitch during
Zane Mapes' at-bat allowed both runners to move up 90 feet, and as Mapes reached safely on an Aggie error, Gauntt came home. WU had runners on the corners with two outs in the comeback threat, but couldn't continue the rally and fell.
No. 14 Southern Arkansas 4, Washburn 3An early lead didn't hold up for the Ichabods in the second contest of the season between Washburn and Southern Arkansas, as WU dropped a 3-2 contest in the weekend's finale after winning the night before, 5-1.
Parker Gibson and
Riley Krane (who doubled) each went 2-for-5 at the plate for WU, while
Lance Barkley was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk and
Payton Soicher had Washburn's other hit.
David Gauntt worked two walks and scored a run as well.
Nick Silva pitched the first six innings and struck out six, allowing eight hits and three runs, though none of them were earned.
Ryne Dowling threw a scoreless seventh inning with one strikeout, and
Zach Linquist (0-1) pitched the eighth, giving up one run in the loss.
WU got out to a hot start for the second game in a row against the Muleriders, leading 2-0 after the first thanks to a smart approach at the plate. With two outs,
Kyle Carnahan was hit by a pitch before the Muleriders walked Gauntt, Barkley, Soicher and
Tanner Triggs in consecutive fashion to allow two Ichabods to score.
SAU took a 3-2 lead in the fourth between three hits and a WU throwing error as Justin Buchanan and Keaton Miller had doubles in the inning.
WU tied things back up in the fifth off two more hits. Barkley doubled down the right field line with one out before moving to third on Soicher's single, and after Triggs was hit by a pitch to load the bases,
Zane Mapes picked up an RBI with a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Barkley.
The eighth inning saw SAU regain the lead for the final time behind a one-out triple from Buchanan.
In the ninth, Gauntt was again hit by a pitch to give WU a lead off baserunner, and though he made it all the way to third, the Ichabods couldn't extend play with a game-tying run.
