Ichabod softball team splits opening day of Apple Market Crossover

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabod softball team went 1-1 on the first day of the Apple Market Regional Crossover hosted by Missouri Western. The Ichabods will return to play on Saturday with Northern State and Concordia-St. Paul starting at 10 a.m.

Game 1  - Minnesota State 6, Washburn 0
The Ichabods were held without a base runner until the fourth inning until Cassidy Merriman reached on a walk and without a hit until the seventh inning on a double by Taylor Zimmerman in a 6-0 loss to Minnesota State in the opening game.
After Merriman reached in the fourth, she was erased after a double play in Washburn's next batter. A walk by Haylee Marsteller in the sixth was stranded a first after two more Ichabod strikeouts.
In the seventh, Erink Keeney reached with a one out walk and then moved to third on a double by Zimmerman, but two more strikeouts ended the Ichabod threat.
Minnesota State (14-5) scored two in the first and added three more in the sixth and a solo run in the seventh leading to the 6-0 win.
Overall, MSU's Coley Ries struck out 15 Ichabod (8-12) batters while walking three improving to 9-3 on the season.
Samantha Carson struck out six batters falling to 5-5 on the season.

Game 2 - Washburn 5, Sioux Falls 2
The Ichabods (9-12) broke open a scoreless game with five runs in the third inning capped by a three-run homer by Marina Quimby scoring Taylor Zimmerman and Erin Keeney. Zimmerman singled driving in Megan Stegman and Keeney's drive to center scored Cassidy Merriman on an error by the Cougars (14-6).
Sioux Falls added two runs in the seventh but wouldn't get any closer as the Ichabods closed out the win snapping a three-game losing streak.
Ashley Wills went the distance allowing two earned runs striking out four with no walks improving to 4-6 in the circle.
Merriman, Stegman and Quimby each had two hits in the game for Washburn.
