TOPEKA, Kan. -- The No. 36-ranked Washburn Ichabod men's tennis team open MIAA play with a 5-4 win over Emporia State at the Washburn Tennis Complex on Tuesday. The Ichabods will return to play on Thursday when they will host Southeastern Oklahoma State.

Matt Barlow's straight-set win over Gerard Pont 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 singles clinched the win for the Ichabods. Washburn led 2-1 after doubles after Washburn won matches at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Blake Hunter and Alejandro Valarezo Plaza topped Gerard Pont and Patrick Cameron 8-4 at No. 1 doubles. Zach Hampton and Barlow recorded the Ichabods' other win beating Matheus Mota and Keenan Smith 8-6.

Starting singles, Valarezo Plaza rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Cameron at No. 1 singles and Hunter beat Louis Ledin 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. Barlow's win at No. 2 was the clinching match for the Ichabods. 

Emporia State picked up wins at Nos. 4-6 singles.
