TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Washburn fell in its weekend series finale, 9-1, at Northeastern State on Sunday, March 6.
WU (7-7, 3-3 MIAA) struggled to bring runners on base home in the game and were hurt by two three-run home runs from the RiverHawks.
Jacob Head (1-1) pitched 5.2 innings in the loss, striking out five before
Greg Mason entered to finish out the sixth inning.
Evan Payne gave up three runs on three hits in the seventh, sharing the inning with
Ryne Dowling, who was tagged for one run.
Derrick McGreevy pitched a scoreless eighth to finish the game.
Wes Jones was 3-for-4 in the game with an RBI while
David Gauntt had a double as one of his two hits.
Riley Krane also had a double and
Payton Soicher drew two walks.
A solo home run by the RiverHawks put Washburn in a 1-0 hole in the second, and the deficit grew to 2-0 in the third off a two-out RBI single into right center. The two multi-RBI home runs came in the sixth and seventh innings.
Washburn threatened throughout, putting runners in scoring position in six innings, but couldn't push any runs across until the top of the ninth when Jones' single up the middle scored
JB Eary, who pinch ran in the inning after Gauntt's leadoff double.
The Ichabods return home for four games next week, taking on William Jewell in a midweek game on Wednesday, March 9 before hosting Northwest Missouri for a three-game series over the weekend.
