INDIANAPOLIS – Washburn University men's and women's basketball each grabbed top 10 spots on the NCAA Division II's national attendance rankings for the 2015-16, announced Wednesday, June 8 by the organization.
Washburn men's basketball averaged 1,890 fans over its 16 home games, ranking 10th nationally with 30,253 total fans. The Ichabods joined two over the teams in the top 10 (No. 4 Nebraska-Kearney and No. 5 Fort Hays State), while regional opponents Northern State and Augustana were Nos. 1 and 2, respectively.
Washburn women's basketball ranked fifth on the list with 1,649 fans on average, bringing in 21,437 total fans over 13 home games. From the MIAA, Fort Hays State (No. 2), Emporia State (No. 3) and Missouri Western (No. 8) were also in the top 10, and regionally the Ichabods saw Northern State and Augustana join the list at Nos. 1 and 4, respectively.
By conference, the MIAA led both lists, with 286,670 total fans watching men's basketball games (1,419 average) and 223,397 fans enjoying women's basketball games (1,117 average). Regional partner Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) was second on the women's list and third for the men, while the Great American Conference (GAC) sat 10th on the men's side and sixth on the women's.
The Ichabod women's basketball team went 15-14 last season while the men went 15-13 as both teams earned berths in the MIAA Tournament. The Ichabods saw five total selections to the All-MIAA teams (combined). As well, 21 student-athletes were MIAA Academic Honor Roll members and there was one scholar athlete and one Academic Excellence award winner.
