Opening Notes
• The Washburn Ichabod football team will hit the road for the first time as they will travel to take on the No. 1-ranked and defending NCAA D2 Champion Northwest Missouri Bearcats on Thursday, Sept. 8 in Maryville, Mo.
• The Ichabods (1-0, 1-0 MIAA) are coming off a 38-19 win over Northeastern State on Sept. 1 in the home opener in Yager Stadium.
• The Bearcats (1-0, 1-0 MIAA) have won their last 16 games after going 15-0 in 2015 while opening the 2016 season with a 41-14 win over Emporia State in their opening on Sept. 1.
• Washburn improved to 74-46-6 all-time in season openers with the 38-19 win over Northeastern State and to 53-22-4 when its opening game was played at home.
• Washburn has won its last seven of its last nine season openers with the losses both coming at the hands of Lindenwood including the 2015 season-opening defeat in a 20-14 game in St. Charles on Sept. 3.
• The Ichabods are coming off a 5-6 season finishing eighth in the 2015 MIAA standings.

Ichabod Defensive Notes
• The Ichabod defense held the RiverHawks to 53 yards of total offense in the second quarter of the game last week on 16 plays and only 34 yards passing … the 19 yards rushing yards came on nine carries.
• Washburn had six different players record seven tackles in the win over Northeastern State last time out …
Corey Ballentine recorded a team-high five solo stops with two assisted tackles while
Austin Tillman,
Keaton Cofield,
Peter Pfannenstiel,
Spenser Matthews and
Cody Heiman all had seven tackles.

Spenser Matthews led the Ichabods with three tackles for loss for 11 yards and had two sacks … he leads the MIAA in tackles for loss and is tied for the conference lead in sacks with two.
• The 36-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown by
Peter Pfannenstiel was the first fumble return for a touchdown by an Ichabod since
Shay Wooten returned one 23 yards for a touchdown against Northeastern State on Nov. 8, 2014.
• The 19 points the Ichabods allowed was the third-lowest total by a defense in the MIAA in the opening week behind Fort Hays State (10 to Missouri Southern) and Northwest Missouri (14 to Emporia State).
• The seven tackles was a career-high for
Corey Ballentine and
Keaton Cofield against Northeastern State.

Derrick McGreevy recorded a career-high five tackles against the RiverHawks.
• The touchdown scored by
Peter Pfannenstiel was the second of his career after returning an interception for a touchdown against Lindenwood in 2014.

Ichabod Offensive Notes
• The Washburn Ichabod offense recorded eight plays of at least 20 yards against Northeastern State in the opener with six coming through the air.

Jake Horner recorded the longest two plays of 63- and 50-yards on pass receptions from
Derek McGinnis.
• Horner recorded a career-high 153 yards receiving in the game on four catches and made his third touchdown in an Ichabod uniform.
• The 63-yard pass by McGinnis tied his longest for his career.
• The Ichabods were 9 of 15 on third down conversions for a 60 percent average which is second in the MIAA after week one.

Derek McGinnis leads the league in passing efficiency at 182.1.
Ichabod Special team Notes

Perry Schmiedeler recorded a career-high three field goals including a long of 39 yards against the RiverHawks and he scored a career-high 12 points with the three field goals and three extra points.
• Washburn leads the MIAA in punting with a 42.3 net yards per punt average as Schmiedeler had three punts for 42.3 yards average with three fair catches by the RiverHawks.

• Northwest Missouri won their fifth overall national championship in 2015 and its third in the last seven years.
• The Bearcats have won their last 16 games after the 41-14 win over Emporia State in the opener last week.
• Northwest Missouri returns 15 starters from last season with eight on offense and seven on defense.
• Quarterback Kyle Zimmerman is second in the MIAA in passing at 310 yards per game after completing 26 of 36 passing attempts for two touchdowns against Emporia State.
• The Bearcats held the Hornets to 13 first downs in the game and to 9 of 16 on third down conversions.
• Northwest held the Hornets to 183 yards of offense with 85 coming on the ground and 98 through the air.

Last meeting with NWMSU
(11/14/2015) TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabod football season came to an end with a 49-13 loss to No. 1-ranked Northwest Missouri. Washburn finishes the season 5-6.
Washburn fell trailed 18-0 at the half and would trail by as many as 25 before
Jake Horner pulled down a 30-yard touchdown reception from
Derek McGinnis on a fourth and 24 putting the Ichabods on the board 25-7.
The Bearcats (11-0, 11-0 MIAA) blocked a punt returning it 24 yards for a touchdown with 3:44 to play in the third quarter stretching the lead to 32-7.
Washburn added to its score on a 4-yard touchdown pass from McGinnis to
Logan Lexow with 2:29 to play in the third quarter.
The Bearcats added 17 more points in the fourth quarter leading to the 49-13 win.
Washburn (5-6, 5-6 MIAA) was led defensively by
Cody Heiman who had 12 tackles and
Peter Pfannenstiel who recorded 11 tackles adding an interception.
Shay Wooten finished with nine tackles recording an interception.
The Ichabods were limited offensively to 18 yards rushing on 29 carries and McGinnis had two touchdown passes and 139 yards through the air.
Brandon Bourbon had three catches for 40 yards to lead the receiving numbers for Washburn.
Last time out for NWMSU
(9/1/2016) EMPORIA, Kan. – No. 1-ranked Northwest Missouri fell behind 7-0 after Emporia State scored on its first drive of the game, but would then score the next 41 straight points before ESU added a touchdown midway through the fourth quarter en route to a 41-14 win.
Kyle Zimmerman threw for 310 yards and two scores and Phil Jackson rushed for 94 yards on 6.7 yards per carry in the win.
The Ichabod defense held the Hornets to 98 yards passing and 85 on the ground in the win.

(9/1/2016) TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabod football team opened its 126th season with a 38-19 win over Northeastern State on Thursday night in Yager Stadium.
The Ichabods led from start to finish in the game as head coach
Craig Schurig picked up career win number 97 as
Jake Horner put the Ichabods on the board pulling down a 63-touchdown pass reception from
Derek McGinnis with 9:43 to play in the opening quarter.
The RiverHawks got on the board with a 43-year field goal by Eddie Garcia with 14:55 to play in the first half cutting the Washburn lead to 7-3.
Washburn took the ensuing drive and marched 64-yards in 13 plays running 4:53 off the clock as
Perry Schmiedeler connected on the first of his three field goals on the night with a 23-yarder with 10 minutes to play in the first half.
On the RiverHawks next drive, Dimonic McKinzy fumbled after being sacked by
Akhmad Abdul-Razzaq and
Cedric Gonzalez and
Peter Pfannenstiel scooped up the ball and returned it 36 yards for a score putting Washburn up 17-3.
The RiverHawks came back witha score of their own trimming the lead to seven with 5:32 to play in the half, but again Washburn responded with a 12-play 60-yard drive as Schmiedeler hit a career-long 39-yard field goal with 59 seconds to play.
Washburn special teams struck again when on the ensuing drive, Abdul-Razzaq blocked the punt and
Gary Wilson returned it 14 yards putting Washburn with the ball at the RiverHawk 8-yard line and Schmiedeler hit a 30-yard field goal as the clock expired in the first half as Washburn took a 23-10 lead into the break.
The Ichabods opened the second half with a seven-play, 75-yard drive as McGinnis hit
Bryce Chavis for a 30-yard touchdown strike stretching the lead to 30-10.
The teams traded punts and the RiverHawks cut the lead to 30-16 with 5:44 to play.
NSU's Eddie Garcia connected on a 30-yard field goal with 13:23 to play in the game and then Washburn came right back with a touchdown of its own on a 1-yard plunge by
Mickeel Stewart, who was wearing No. 9 in honor of former Ichabod
Brandon Bourbon who passed away this past summer. The Ichabods used the swinging gate for a two-point conversion as
Cody Summers rushed in for the score staking the Ichabods to a 38-19 lead wrapping up the scoring in the game.
The Ichabods rushed for 211 yards in the game on 45 carries led by Stewart's 53 yards and one score. Four Ichabods had at lead 26 yards rushing in the game.
McGinnis finished with 275 yards rushing and two touchdown passes giving him 28 for his career.
Horner led the Ichabods with 158 yards receiving on four catches and Chavis had four catches as well for 54 yards and one score. He finished with 183 all-purpose yards.
Defensively, six different Ichabods had seven tackles as
