The Washburn women's soccer team split this past weekend's matches, tying a season-high with its third consecutive victory Friday, in a 2-1 win over Lindenwood University, before falling to the No. 1 University of Central Missouri 2-1 Sunday.
After giving up an early first-half goal to the Lions in Friday's game, the Ichabods countered with a strong second half performance, scoring two unanswered goals.
The Lions scored in the fourth minute on a Becky Roberts goal, her fifth of the season. The Ichabods were stifled on offense in the first 45 minutes, getting off just two shots compared to the Lions' seven. None of the Ichabods' shots in the first half were on goal.
The Ichabods finally got on the board in the 70th minute, when
Tera Lynch scored on an assist from
Kelsi Smith, tying the game at 1-1. It took until the 86th minute for the Ichabods to take a lead, when
Paige Swanson scored her fourth goal of the year off of a
Rebecca Weimer assist.
The Ichabods fell just short of upsetting the top-ranked Jennies of Central Missouri, despite a major shot discrepancy.
The Ichabods gave up a season-high 30 shots to one of the most prolific offenses in the nation, but gave up just two goals, tying a season-low for the Jennies.
The Jennies were the first on the board in the ninth minute, when Baylie Edwards was awarded a penalty kick and scored on Washburn keeper
Kaitlin Minnich. The score remained at 1-0 until halftime.
Just 2:32 after the start of the second half,
Emily Stauffer scored for the Ichabods to tie it up at 1-1. In scoring a goal, the Ichabods did what only Emporia State University has done all season, which is score on UCM goalkeeper Ana Dilkes. The tie did not last but seven minutes, as Mikala Modiri scored her third goal of the season to put the Jennies back up 2-1.
The Ichabods were able to get off just one more shot attempt in the rest of the match, as
Jasmine Palmer sent a shot wide left in the 64th minute.
At 8-5-1, 4-3-0 in the MIAA, the Ichabods will look to climb up the conference standings with matches against the second-place team in the conference in Missouri Western State University Friday, before facing off with the Bearcats of Northwest Missouri State University Sunday.
