MONTICELLO, Ark. --- The Washburn Ichabod baseball team climbed to 6-1 on the season after sweeping its Saturday doubleheader against Arkansas-Monticello at Weevil Stadium in Monticello, Arkansas.
Game 1: Washburn 14, Arkansas-Monticello 4 (7 INN)
Paced by four runs batted-in from
Riley Krane and three apiece from
Cole Gardner and
JB Eary the Ichabods scored early and often as they built a 14-0 advantage through six innings.
Krane opened the scoring in the first when he belted a two-run homer to left-center before
Darian Abram,
Bowe Behymer and Krane each scored in the second pushing the score 5-0. A sacrifice bunt from
Cole Gardner in the third was enough for
Kasey Clark to cross home.
In the fourth, Washburn pushed the score to 11-0 as it exploded for five runs. Abram was the first Ichabod to score thanks to a RBI single from
Josh Crosby.
Tanner Triggs then pushed
Curtis Whitten across with a single to right field. After a wild pitch allowed Crosby to make it 9-0. The big inning for the Ichabods was capped with runs from Clark and Triggs by way of a single to left by Gardner.
The WU scoring came to an end in the sixth after a three-run homer by
JB Eary allowed Clark and
Brett Nickle to cross and make it 14-0. The Boll Weevils (2-4) dodged the shut out with a four-run sixth.
The victory was credited
Lance Barkley (2-0) after another stellar outing in which he worked five innings allowing no hits, two walks with four strikeouts.
Blake Peterson and
Zach Linquist each made one inning relief appearances and combined for six hits with the four runs being charged to Peterson.
Game 2: Washburn 6, Arkansas-Monticello 2
After scoring a run in the first and fourth the Ichabods gave themselves a bit of breathing room with a three-run third to make it 5-0. During the inning, Krane registered his sixth RBI of the day thanks to a single to center which allowed Abram to reach second after getting aboard with a walk. Two batters later Clark came through with a hit that slipped through the left side allowing a Krane and
Curtis Whitten to each cross home.
Gabe Franklin then capped the scoring for Washburn in seventh with a solo homer. Trailing 6-0, Arkansas-Monticello trimmed the deficit to four-runs after back-to-back base loaded walks made it 6-2. The Boll Weevil rally failed to materialize much more after that as WU reliever
Jaren Kutzke slammed the door to hold UAM scoreless for the remainder of the contest.
Jacob Head picked up his second win of season as he scattered two hits and two runs in six innings with four walks and strikeouts. Head faced a total of 24 batters and hurled 93 pitches, 58 of which for strikes.
Josh Ramirez and
Jaren Kutzke each made relief appearances with the Kutzke getting credit for the save.
Washburn scored on eight hits and left seven stranded while UAM had six hits, committed two errors with 11 runners left on-base.
Collective numbers for Washburn batters included Krane and Crosby each finishing the day at 5-of-9 from the plate. Behymer went 2-for-7 with a walk. Abram led all Ichabods with five runs with Clark and Krane following with three each.
The Ichabods return to action Friday, Feb. 17 as they open a four-game set in Springfield, Missouri against Drury.
